Re: Networking 101

Anyone that owned or/is interested in obtaining a third party firmware for the Linksys WRT54G Wireless router can get from this link

http:// www. hyperwrt . org (without the space)

It is much better then the one provided by linksys.

Re: Networking 101

I shall enjoy this post, I am always testing new equipment. Most of the time it is Home/Home Office type, but I get an occational business router.
I have a new 802.11n from netgear coming, it will be my new project to hack to bits, since I got bored with the belkin pre-n.
I'll keep an eye on this thread as well to see if I can help with anything also. :-)

Re: Networking 101

I believed a new sub topic would be more effecient rather then put everything in this thread.

Imagine everything is posted under this thread and different ppl have different problems. and by this thread title Networking 101.

To be honest, if I was a new person to this forum and looking at the thread heading I wouldn't know that this thread is dedicated for networking support.

Every since I have posted the idea of having a networking topic and Robb4248 had sticky this topic with the heading Networking 101 so far not many people has posted a problem or anything related to the networking issues.

Anyways. This is not up to me to decide where or how it should be placed in this forum.

Re: Networking 101

Your problem could be in the coupler.
I know it sounds like a ghetto modification, but make sure the two rj45's are pushed in far, then use scotch tape or a string to hold them in place.
Either that or just buy a new ethernet cable that is long enough.
I doubt the new n routers would help you, a lot of people have been having horror stories.
The only reason I ordered an N router is because I plan on writing my own firmware for it.

Re: Networking 101

n routers are powerful, im getting wifi from my neighbor across the street. he's using a belkin router. I have a dlink di-524 wireless router, my signal never drops and it runs 24/7. Is it good to run your router for 24/7, i mean i have security on everything, and almost everybody in my neighborhood has wifi and we always monitor our surroundings for unsuspected wardrivers. i just want to know, if its good hardware wise to run my router 24/7

Re: Networking 101

it is a good idea to regularly change the pass key on a regular basis. It is also a good idea to switch ur router/modEm off when u r not using it.

Re: Networking 101

If you only use your router for the internet a few times a day, turn it off when your not using it, but if you are on the internet all day, just switch it off at night, just so people wont be thiefing your net signal.

If ya want to be secure about it, put MAC Auth. on it, cause WEP is nothing these days, can be cracked with no pressure at all.
