As reiterated a few times before, back in January three major CPU manufacturers have unveiled their top-of-the-line processors for year 2013. There's Nvidia with its Tegra 4 chip, Samsung and its Exynos 5 octa-core SoC and of course Qualcomm and the Snapdragon 600 and 800 series.

However, all of these chips are destined for high-end smartphones or "superphones", but as we all know there are other market segments as well. Not every handset needs to be high-end simply because with beefier hardware specs, the price goes up as well and not everyone wants or needs to spend a small fortune for a smartphone.

Well, if you've waited to learn more about the technology that will be used in low/mid-range smartphones throughout year 2013, then you should be pleased to know that today we're going to talk a bit about what you can expect regarding the matter, as Qualcomm has just announced its Snapdragon 200 and 400 CPUs.

The Snapdragon 200 series will arrive with a quad-core Cortex-A5 architecture, each core being clocked at 1.4 GHz. The CPU comes hand in hand with an Adreno 203 GPU and supports GPS, 8 MP cameras and CDMA or multi-SIM UMTS. The 200 series is targeted for low-end smartphones, delivering good battery life and a good balance between performance and price.

The Snapdragon 400 series is a bit more powerful than its sibling and it's destined for mid-range smartphones. The 400 arrives in two versions, one of which males use of a dual-core Krait aSMP CPU with a frequency of 1.7 GHz, while the other variant consisting in a quad-core Cortex-A7 clocked at 1.4 GHz per core. Both variants are mated with an Adreno 305 GPU and offer a large number of modem options for compatibility with any cellular network. Furthermore, both versions of the CPU will feature native Miracast wireless display technology.

Although Qualcomm hasn't revealed an exact release date of these chips, we suspect that both the Snapdragon 200 and 400 series will make their way to low and mid-end gadgets sooner rather than later.
