The iPhone looks great. Of course the video presents it as working
perfectly with plenty of reliable connections and bandwidth. In a
couple of weeks we'll have reports of its ability to function with
    real networks.

The $500 price is fair for what's being offered, and is already the
"discounted" multi-year service plan price. Cingular--oops--AT&T is
surely paying Apple to have it exclusively, either direct payments or
a cut of the monthly service contract. And the monthly charges should
be lucrative for AT&T with all the data traffic.

What the iPhone doesn't do yet intrigues me more than what it does,
and for that reason I'll wait until version 2.0 before even
considering it. I'd like an iPhone that can also:

    - Know where it is and exchange that information with other
location-aware phones. The iPhone would be ideal, in conjunction
with Google Maps, to display someone else's location. How many
parents would like that? And spouses, friends, employers,...

    - Offer spoken turn-by-turn directions. Not enough onboard compute
power and storage to do so, but it should be able to do this through
the network. Wouldn't that be great on a trip in a rental car to
get directions through the speaker phone. The video shows they can
display Google Map directions and current traffic--seems like a
modest extra for Google to also download spoken directions.

    - Share and update my iPhone calendar with other people and devices,
    including home and work PCs.

    - Offer Skype and other VOIP long-distance providers. And with that
nice camera and speaker phone, why not offer live webcaming too?

YouTube, uh, sure. How come that dog video clip is so much clearer
than all the YouTube videos I've ever seen??? Gee, you think Apple's
marketing company had their hand in there...

If the iPhone does 85% of what the video says it will, it will be a
huge hit and set in concrete and steel Jobs' reputation as both an
innovator and closer. I'm rooting for it to succeed and improve over
    the next couple of years.

made, because I would never have thought of them or perceived why they
    were important.

A compass is $1.95 at the Girl Scout store.

Replicate your own typos and those from others.

As if anybody wants to see your pee-pee while you hide in a store's
    dressing room.

Maybe Apple's marketing company actually knows what a tripod is for.

Thanks Mr. Jobs. Good luck with your little 2G thingy.

With the map I already have, a compass proves helpful. And the last
time a backseat driver wouldn't shut up, I put her out on the curb with
cab fare. A real man doesn't need anything else. OTOH, a mouse...

The #1 complaint from anyone I know is that it doesn't sync with
Exchange servers. For business use this is a killer and $500-$600
phones are most easily swallowed by business users. You won't see one
iPhone in my business until it can fully sync with Exchange over the
air. That means email, contacts, calender, the works.

Bashing iPhone? Me? Where'd I do that? I'm not bashing iPhone, I
think it's a cute toy wrapped around a cell phone. Sounds like EPS
needs some GPS thing to hold his hand while crossing the street so he
don't get lost. Look out EPS! There's a curb over there! You're almost
    there! SCREEEECH....! CRASH!!!!! Game over.

My compass don't need no stinking batteries. My compass don't need no
stinking radio. My compass got me into, across, and out of 17 different
countries on 4 continents, and I don't need no stinking yappy toy
telling me how to do my damn job nor when I'm finished doing it. EPS is
welcome to ride along whenever he wants, so long as his backseat time is
devoted to something other than making me listen to his damn toy yammer
on and on about where we are, where we're going, or when we're gonna get
there. However, if I think I'm lost, I'm happy to stop to ask someone
to tell me I'm wrong. OTOH, if I wanted to listen to a 2 y/o **** on my
afternoon, I would've made one 2 years and nine months ago when I had
the chance. I didn't and it ain't complicated. Now, child, am I clear?

Bashing iPhone? Where'd I do that?

A very simple iPhone-friendly version of the BBC news, which presumably
just pulls in the site’s RSS feed and re-skins it for the iPhone’s
    screen size.
