I was told by Sprint to have my cell phone updated. I took it to the Sprint
Store and had it done. They ended up porting my number to another city and I
couldn't get local calls. I like to never got it fixed. They didn't know
what to do about it. I finally found a local employee that knew an employee
1000 miles away that could help. It was a continuous passing the buck and
given the run around. Be careful

What do you mean they ported your number to another city? There's no
    such thing.

Yeah kind of hard to have fixed localized numbers when you are
utilizing a mobile, roaming capable device.

Huhhh? First off, what phone model do you have, and who told you to update
it? Did they say what the update was for ... firmware or PRL?

As for porting your number to a different city, I have a hard time believing
    that.

Sprint advised me to update the software. They updated the PRL. They had my
number ported to a town 50 miles away. Beleive me it can happen.

Well then, it's the first time it has, at least reported here. First off,
they don't port numbers within their system. To port a number means to
switch to a different provider, whether it be a wireless or landline
    provider.

They will change the area code and number, when a member moves to a
different area and has a different mailing address.

Maybe it's as Paul said, and you received someone else's phone.

Then, pick up a landline phone, preferably a speaker phone, and call up SPCS
CS and explain the problem. They will lead you into how to re-program your
phone back to your original number.

I don't think the term "number porting" applys to what happened to your
phone. It seems that somehow, some other number was put in place of
yours on your phone. I suspect that your number is still assigned to
your carrier and you have the use of it, but your handset was
    mis-programmed.

Could they have inadvertently simply changed you number to another city
with a different area code? or in the same area code but outside the
    local calling scope?

For example if moved from the 903 area code to 915, I would have gotten
a new number. If anyone tried calling my old seven digit number, it
would answer as not in service. They would have to dial the 915 area
code and my seven digit number.

If I moved from 915 El Paso to 915 Snyder, the effect would be the same.

software updates on cell phones and porting numbers are not even done by the
    person at sprint.

    its almost impossible

Software updates are done at the stores. Porting is initiated at the stores
or by Telesales or Customer Service (I had my port from Verizon started by a
store rep) but are processed by an independent company.

Sorry, I meant to say done by the same person.
Techs do the Software and PRL updates. and the sales
people initiate the porting of the numbers.

Particularly in areas where there's only ONE Area Code.

Besides, even if the first seven numbers are in the same exact
sequential order as that of someone else's, the Area Code serves as a
fallback so that calls are directed to the right telephone.

Are you sure you don't have a case of a bunch of people not dialing your
    number correctly?

    Cheers for now
