    Many years ago I sold a computer an hour on average as a
    Christmas part-timer at Computer-City.

    They had many seemingly former shoe salesmen there.
    Their stock answer to any question:
    (i.e. Is this Okidata LED printer as goood as a Laser printer?)

    "Well, we sell a lot of them!"

    Past few years I havent shopped at CC as they wouldnt honor their
    price match of 110% of difference at their Meyerland, Tx store.

    They richly desrve to go out of business as far as I'm concerned.
    I buy most my electronic pieces parts at buy.com
    anymore.

    I noticed that Target has now started selling postpaid Verizon service,
    whereas before they were only selling InPulse service. Wal-Mart is also
    now selling postpaid Verizon service, as is Costco. Verizon has no
    shortage of retail outlets. No wonder they've become the largest carrier
    in the U.S.. Soon they'll add the Alltel customers to their totals as
    well. The HTC Touch Pro coming to Verizon (already being sold on Sprint
    for two days) will really help Verizon since it's so much more capable
    than the iPhone.

    I was hoping for fire sale prices Wednesday, but I'd have to go to Atlanta.

    Had a great day with CC stock today. I was watching for the announcement
    and bought shares at 29 cents this morning. I rode the roller coaster a
    little too long, not dumping the 47 cents high until it had dropped off to
    40c/share by the time I reacted. Still, 55% return on investment in 3
    hours looks great on my account statement...(c; $14 fees well spent.

    Sure love these turbulent stock prices....(c;]

    A scrawny kid comes in and applies for a job as a sales associate at a
    large megastore. The HR lady is impressed with his enthousiasm, dispite
    his lack of sales experience, so she puts him on and sends him to the
    associate supervisor.

    The supervisor figures he won't last a week so sends him over to the
    pharmacy department to help the customers find things on the shelf.

    the supervisor stops by the kid's locker at the end of the shift and
    asked him if he sold anything that day, just for amusement. "Sure!",
    the kid replies. "How much was it?", the supervisor asks.
    "$76,842.13.", the kid says while tying his shoes. "WHAT?!", the
    supervisor exclaims on his way towards the bench to avoid falling over.

    "Well, this guy comes into pharmacy and asked me where the Tampax was.
    While I went over to show him, I mentioned that as he wasn't going to
    have a good day buying these things he might just as well go fishing!"

    "We started talking about fishing equipment, so I took him over to
    sporting goods where he bought a new rod, reel, some other fishin' gear,
    a big cooler to put his catch in and asked me to help him haul it out to
    his car."

    "On the way to the car, I asked him if he had a boat. He didn't so we
    took a detour to the new marine department, where he fell in love with
    that nice 30 foot center console with the twin 250hp Yamahas on it.
    After we got the boat, we took his little stuff to his car where I made
    the comment that his car was never going to pull the new boat safely up
    the boat ramp, so we took a detour to the Car and Truck Dealership and
    he bought a bright red Ford F-350 dually diesel pickup loaded to the
    gills!"

    "He's coming back tomorrow to pick up the boat after I suggested he get
    it loaded up with sonar, radar, VHF marine radio and a stereo while the
    truck shop is installing the big hitch I sold him for the truck."

    "It all came to $76,842.13 before taxes.", the kid proudly proclaimed.

    "I know I'm a new hire and really don't deserve any time off, but can I
    have tomorrow afternoon off to go fishin' with him out on the lake? He
    called his wife before he left and she wants to talk to me about a new
    van to haul her kids around in."


    The supervisor gave him the whole day off, having set a new sales record
    for a single customer and as "Salesman of the Month" for November.

    (not my story and it's very old....but your comments gave me a
    flashback.)

    I am not saying that it would be a bad move for someone who worked
    for verizon to work for RadioShack instead, but RadioShack no longer
    sells verizon phones.

    It's a losing proposition! The people who need it are incapable of
    learning it or just don't care. You don't have to listen too hard to
    hear worse! How about 'Her and Bruce went to a movie." I actually
    heard a grown man, and presumably a native speaker, say just that!

    You're lucky, since CC is almost certainly headed for Chapter 11.

    The epitaph for Circuit City will be that they "brought out the
    consumerism in consumer electronics," (not my words) with their failed
    efforts to promote the DIVX DVD format. Until DIVX, the stores thought
    they could foist anything on a gullible public.

    All excellent points.

    I like them better when they were Dixie Hifi and I could buy a powerful
    stereo with HUGE speakers from a salesman on commission who was REALLY
    interested in helping me.

    I think when CC dropped sales commissions, they doomed the company, but
    Best Buy doesn't pay the help to help and they're still raking it in.

    If an establishment provides exemplary customer service from
    non-commission employees who are knowledgeable about what they are
    selling the establishment will succeed.

    Take a look at some of the retail establishments on Fortune Magazines
    Top 100 Companies to Work For list. Majority of those do not pay high
    wages but they do take care of their employees...benefits even for p/t,
    company discounts, great working environment, good managers, etc. Most
    people that work for those retailers work there because they LIKE
    working there. Circuit City never had employees like that.

    DIVX is totally different than DivX.
