That's how supply and demand works in a capitalist system. Demand is very high, so the price is going to be high. And yes, Apple gets to benefit from the high demand. It is their reward for making a device that is in such high demand. Over time though, as newer more powerful devices come into the market and raise the bar, the price of the iPhone will drop. Right now, other manufacturers are working with designers and service carriers to develop competing devices, such as Palm's new "Pre". Once the new devices hit the market, that will take away some of Apple's iPhone business, and push down the price of the iPhone as well. For now though, it's Apple's game.

haha. to get locked ones, it's either you buy a used one or a refurb from at&t or verizon...
i think it would be nearly impossible to get a new one that is locked.
