Re: children using iPhones
Yup, times have changed. Kids should still go out and run around or stare at the sky and daydream.
But don't keep this wonderful machine from them. Actually, any touch-enabled computer is wonderful with kids. Their natural instinct to interaction with their fingers and absorb the resulting experience is simply amazing.
Like i was saying, just don't use the phone as a babysitter. Use it with them. Let them have fun and learn new things. Playing in the sandbox, eating dirt (or yellow snow), and running around are all necessary activities. So is interacting with a computer and playing a round of pong with the old man. New world...got to adapt. It's not about the device, but rather how you integrate it into the growth of your kid.
I am thinking of an iPad for my 3 year old. It's probably useless for me, but I can see my daughter having a hell of a time with it, especially during our long commute. What do you think?

Re: children using iPhones
Absolutely. The Demon Children spend a lot of time running and romping, doing hands-on, physical type stuff with the wife and I. Riding bicycles, climbing trees, hiking, motorcycle trips. All manner of fun. Some stuff directly with one or both of us, and other activities on their own, supervised (surreptitiously) from a distance.
In the final analysis, it ain't for me to say. You're her parent, and you know her better than anyone else. One thing I do know about kids (I have 5 of them, ages 5 to 32) is that no two of them are alike. They all have different interests and strengths, and mature at different rates. With the right apps and adequate supervision, I can see an iPad being a bang-up toy for your daughter. Just so you don't wig out if she drops it and it goes 'crunch.'
My kids are heavily into technology, to the extent that we allow it. My 9 year old boy has a smokin' fast Linux PC that he built himself, with only minor assistance from the old man. He's had to do a lot of learning, though, because I really don't help him as much as you'd think. He's also shoveled snow, raked leaves, and done other things to earn half the parts cost.

Re: children using iPhones
yup, babies are quite interested with it, my kid was only 5 months old, when she would laugh while pressing the icons, I make sure it's lock so it she won't delete a file by accident. =)

Re: children using iPhones
I have 2 little girls... one is almost 4 and the other is 20 months. The 4 year old has been using the iPhone and iTouch for over a year. She can unlock it, play games, and look at pics (I mean zoom in, scroll around them, etc), she also likes to take pictures on our phones. She has inherited the touch now since I don't use it anymore. We only let her play with them in dr offices and in the car sometimes when she is restless... its a good time consumer when we need it.
My 20 month old can now look at pics if you load them up for her. She knows to slide her finger to get the next one. I give her a few months, and she will be proficient as well.
