Re: what apps should i get in IPhone
There are many useful, free apps on iTunes. I enjoyed Pocket God (paid), Doodle Jump(paid) and Zombie Farm (FREE!)

Funny you should mention the fart app(s). I know the guy who wrote it. Quit his day job and writing apps for a living now. Yes, do buy it. It's hella funny. Put it on a timer and let your friend borrow it.

Re: what apps should i get in IPhone
For music/talk radio/internet radio I recommend iHeartRadio, AOL Radio, and Pandora. All free apps. iHeartRadio gives you access to the vast majority of Clear Channel stations, AOL Radio gives you access to CBS Radio stations, and Pandora is the best internet radio out there. Google's Voice app (free) is great for googling on the go, just speak into the phone and it googles what you say. For example, you can say "starbucks" into the app and the first hit returned is the closest one to you (if you allow location services) which you can then either call or see on google maps, which it will switch directly too. For fun, besides the fart app(s) there's the light saber app (free) which uses the accelerometer. If you're into cars, Vin Hunter (free and paid versions) is a great tool. You can type in a vin number and recall all sorts of info about the car... make, model, engine size, original retail value, etc. You can also photograph and store a picture, and even retrieve a carfax (carfax acct required) right from the app. The information is all stored directly within the app, so it works even without connection to the network which makes it a great tool for iPod touch users as well. For news I use USA today, Express and Engadets apps (all free), and UStream broadcaster and viewer apps (free) are great, and add video recording capability to the 3G models. Lunar Module 3D is a great lunar lander game (paid and free versions), Facebook (free), 5-0 Radio is a GREAT police/fire/ambulance scanner (paid and free versions), Opera mini is a VERY popular (free) browser that has just been released, but the built in Safari browser is better imho. That should pretty much get you started. Also, visit the top 25 paid and free apps in the app store on the phone for the latest most popular downloads.
Hope that helps

Yelp, News apps (like NYTimes and USAtoday), Appbox Pro, Shazam, and Pandora to name a few "must haves"
