Just wanted to give you guys a heads-up. My wife and I went into our local ATT wireless store to ask about getting new numbers for our phones. We moved from Illinois to California and want local numbers. After talking to customer service on the phone prior to going to the store, we were told that all we need to do is get new sim cards with local phone numbers - no loss of rollover minutes, no re-activation or "transfer fees"- basically, just change numbers w/o changing anything to our family plan.
When we walked in and talked to the "manager" about this matter, we were told that a $35 transfer fee was needed for each phone line in the family plan (we have 4 lines), and our roll over minutes would be lost - BUT, the manager said-if we transfer our lines today and basically start a whole new plan - he will waive 2/4 transfer fees and give us 1000 rollover minutes (we have 4000 at this point).
Ofcourse we didnt do this and went home and called customer service. The Rep was nice enough to personally call the local ATT store while we were still on the phone, and ofcourse, they denied the transfer fee charge or telling us that we have to start a whole new plan.
Just a word of caution, this is not the first time the ATT store or an ATT rep has tried to pull a fast one on me.

Yes. These Pricks are scandalous. I ALWAYS call a 611 rep from my phone to verify their story. No matter what.

Rep's at at AT&T store make commission so they are like used cars salesmen with shiny new phones to offer.

Rep's on the phone are more concerned about keeping you as a customer as they do not make any commission. They are more ept to waive fees and keep you happy than rape your pocket book. I've even had reps waive "over my minute fees." Over a $100 charge. As long as their is good reason they are happy to accomidate.

I'm not one for large companies or their tactics but i've never been upset with cingular so for that much i can justify signing another two year contract.

Wow I didn't know they would do that kind of stuff. Thanks for the heads up. Also the reps on the phone are nice we had a 700 dollar bill because of overage fees, and when we called they had no problem in resetting the fees and upping our minutes on our plan.

But to think the ******** in the store would do something like that...

Was this at a corporate store or an authorized dealer?

Its sad to say that these people will do anything to get more sales. I have been lied to several times at an actual ATT store, not an authorized seller. Be very careful, and next time see ifyou can just do it over the phone, I think its possible for number changes.

Re: Beware of local ATT wireless store

I as well as hit by an INSANE fee because the reps didn't so much lie to be as carefully picked their words in order to make me think they were saying something else.

I admit, its partly my fault, but they were clearly hoping this would happen.

I asked THREE different people, on the phone and in a local store.

I was planning a trip to Canada and asked if my internet would still work.... they all just said yes. I even asked about roaming fees for my calls and if the internet connected through my voice connection, as I didn't want to be charged extra to use my unlimited data plan, they said no.

Notice how everything they said is correct, but its clear I had no clue how roaming worked, including how you would be charged insane fees for data roaming as opposed to voice roaming. They DIDN'T tell me however about the INSANE roaming fees for data I would be getting.

I came back with a $2000 bill! Everybody refused to do ANYTHING about it, I was forced to pay. They said I could pay it in installments and my service would continue to work as long as I paid on time.... guess what? After my first payment my service was cut off, the rep acted ignorant and claimed they know nothing about installments and that I have to pay it all at once.

They basically KNEW I knew nothing about roaming but led me to believe data roaming wouldent cost me as I had unlimited data, refused to do anything, and claimed ignorance when even trying to help me pay it off!!!

Funny.... I recall similar stories of people with iPhones who had no idea they were connecting online while away and coming back with $3000-8000 bills.... almost all of which were waived after bad press. I guess they didn't want any news about high fees with the iPhone getting out while some random Att 8525 PocketPC phone user they could easily abuse without any bad press.
