Re: How to....??? Smartphone without data plan
if your already with att then I would look at unlocked smartphones as long as they run on the 850/1900 band that work on the gsm network

Re: How to....??? Smartphone without data plan
AT&T does not require a data plan for any phone except the iPhone. Even then, there is no contract involved. You only have to maintain the iPhone data plan as long as you use the iPhone on the network. If you are using an AT&T branded PDA, the only data plans you can purchase are those for PDAs.

Re: How to....??? Smartphone without data plan
I have had a Smartphone (AT&&T Tilt) for 2 years. I paid for a text plan for the first month, in order to get the phone on contract. I then cancelled the text plan, and have remained with just voice. But now, I'm looking to upgrade my phone and was told that ALL smartphones from AT&T require a data plan. One lady at the AT&T Store told me that I could not even use an unlocked phone. That AT&T would detect that it was a smart phone and force me on to a data plan. I don't think this is accurate. If I buy a phone, I can not see how AT&T can force me into something that I don't need or want. Can anyone shine any light on this?

Re: How to....??? Smartphone without data plan
I was told the exact same thing today at the at&t store. I would think it'd be illegal for them to just add the data plan on your plan if you didn't agree or sign up for it..they're not allowed to make ANY changed to your plan without your consent.
I wonder though...why couldn't one just buy the phone at full retail somewhere...then just switch it with the phone they are currently using? That wouldn't count as an upgrade, and I have done this many times when I've had phones break, and i just switch it with another phone I had laying around.

Re: How to....??? Smartphone without data plan
well I was using an nokian75 and then my friend gave me a blackberry because he got an iphone.. I changed my sim card and it worked for a few months then I got a text message from att saying that they are adding a 30 dollar data package because I am using a blackberry. I changed the sim card back to my old nokia and went down to the store telling them that I am using a nokia not a blackberry. They took off the 30 dollar data charge but said that if I try to use the blackberry again the Ime of the phone would come back as a blackberry and I would get charged again.

Re: How to....??? Smartphone without data plan
When is the last time you were in an AT&T store??? I was in there today paying my bill, and (for the first time), I wandered around and looked at every phone they offer. Virtually EVERY phone they have now REQUIRES a $20 data plan (iPhone $30). Go look at the price tags on the phones. Almost every single one says "This phone requires a $20 data plan".
I also just don't get it. I see alot of people out there saying they want a smart phone, but don't want a data plan. What gives? That's like saying, I want a car, but I don't want to have to pay for gas. What's the point of having a smartphone without a data plan? IMHO, it's ridiculous to want a smartphone just to cripple it by not having a data plan. I know you're going to come back with the argument that one can use WIFI, but WIFI isn't everywhere, and when you need internet access, you need the 3G network to fall back on.

Actually, wi-fi is everywhere I go (unless you count the drive to where I'm going). Maybe I'm unique in that I've had smart phones with wi-fi access and no need for a data plan for the last 4 years. Wi-fi is at my work, home, friends, places I go out, even in the city's park. So please tell me that you have a learning disability and I can go about business without explaining to you why I demand a different form of service. I love sending emails to people with smart phones all the time because I know that even a little 'thank you' completely interrupts their train of thought.
peace

Re: How to....??? Smartphone without data plan
I have used PDAs and then smartphones for many years now. I almost never use them directly on-line. When I do, I use Wi-Fi. I often carry a laptop. I would sync my smartphone to the laptop to bring in updates, e-mail, etc.
I have no problem with having the data plans available for people who need/want them. I DO NOT!!! I would rather pay more for the phone than lock-in to a data plan. They try to force you into it even when you bring a phone which they have not subsidized (bought or given by a third party).

Re: How to....??? Smartphone without data plan
Most people do not realize that there is a workaround to this. If you are to purchase an AT&T phone online without a contract - AT&T does not require you to have a data plan where the other carriers like Verizon and Sprint do. Generally this only applies to used and refurbished phones, but you can also find sellers who sell new phones without contracts. A guy in our office uses an iphone without a data plan.

Re: How to....??? Smartphone without data plan
That is not true. Several guys in our office use Blackberry and Iphone devices without a data plan. If you buy the phone from AT&T directly you are required to use a data plan. If you purchase the phone online either used, refurbished, or any other way without a contract attached to it already - you are not required to pay for a plan. Our company specializes in refurbished and used phones and this is something that is asked often.
