I'm totally new to the cell phone world. I was wondering if you can sign up for a service and use a cell phone I bought somewhere else?

Specifically I want to sign up for a plan with Fido but I was thinking it might be cheaper to get a phone somewhere else. How can I find out if I can use the phone with a certain company?

    Thanks for any info.

When you buy a fone it is locked to a certain company, but you can get the fone unlocked (nokia's are simple to unlock) Here in ireland dey will unlock dem in da shops or over da fone! But you can also buy sim free fones! and den buy a sim card for da network u want 2 join!

There are also different technologies to consider. Fido uses GSM and so does Rogers, so phones from these two companies are interchangeable. But Telus and Bell phones won't work with Fido because they are CDMA/TDMA.

BTW, Fido's prices are quite good in comparison to the others.

Thanks for the information. I think I've got a handle on how this works now.

I'll probably just do the simple thing and get a phone along with a plan from Fido. Easiest for someone like me.
