There are two ways to perform a Factory Data Reset, also known as a master reset or hard reset.
Before resetting, back up personal data to SD card or PC ; have Google login & password handy.
Please note that all data will be deleted from the HTC EVO 4G as a result of this procedure. This process does NOT delete data stored on the microSD card. We recommend backing up all of your personal data before proceeding.
1. Use onscreen menues:
~For Android 1.6 devices, visit Settings -> SD Card and phone storage -> Factory data reset.
~For Android 2.0 devices, visit Settings -> Privacy -> Factory data reset. This will wipe all data on your device; the SD/memory card will not be touched.
2. Use hardware buttons:
- Turn the power off. If your HTC EVO 4G is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
- Hold the Volume Down button
- Press and release the Power button
- You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
- Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
- Press and release the Power button
- Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
If you selected YES, all data including third-party applications will be deleted from the HTC EVO 4G. Once the wipe is complete, the phone will reboot to its factory fresh state.
~After the reset:
- Once your phone gets its data connection back you will be prompted to sign back into your Gmail account.
- Be sure you know you Gmail email address and password. If you do not know them, you will have the option of creating a new Gmail account.
- If you successfully sign back in with your previous Gmail account, the information that was synchronized with Google (Gmail, calendar & contacts) prior to the reset will sync back and return to your phone.

Re: Android Factory data reset
Yeah, hats off to ya', camstuf! I've had to do this procedure 2 or 3 times now and I've only had this S3 for a few weeks now. I always miss something though, so this tut is a great tool for all of us!

Re: Android Factory data reset
The step 2 you've told seems like Hard reset. Or both the factory data reset and hard reset works in a similar way?

Re: Android Factory data reset
This is actually some really good information. I am going to be selling my S4 in just a little while, and the last thing I wanted was for there to be information on my phone that people would be able to trace back to me. This is going to clean my slate, which is exactly what I wanted to have done.
