Not many of us would consider LG as a smart phone maker. I mean they are better known for their home appliances aren’t they? But the truth of the matter is that they make some pretty decent smart phones as well. LG had a market share of over 8 % in 2010 and I think they are gearing up to grab a much larger share of the market very soon. Their latest smart phone is the LG G2 and it comes with some industry leading technology. And what better way of discovering a smart phone than by comparing it with one of the best smart phones in the market today, the Samsung Galaxy S4...

    Size and weight

Samsung has really comes to terms with the smart phone market are far as size and weight are concerned. The Galaxy S4 measures 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm which is amazing for a smart phone with such a large screen. The LG G2 measures 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm. But what you don’t know is that the LG G2 actually has a larger screen than the Galaxy S4. That’s a first isn’t it? The Galaxy S4 is still on top in terms of weight though at 130 g while the LG G2 weighs in at 143 g.

Even though LG is heavier and bigger, it does have a larger screen and the LG G2 isn’t the heaviest smart phone out there by a long shot. That’s why this one is a draw.

    Display

This is where Samsung usually shines, but the winner isn’t quite obvious this time. The Galaxy S4 comes with a 5.0” Super AMOLED touch screen that has a pixel density of 441 ppi. But the LG G2 comes with a 5.2” IPS LCD touch screen with a pixel density of 423 ppi. Both smart phones have a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and you can easily spend a few hours just watching videos on either.

Is there really a winner here? Even though the LG G2 has a bigger screen, I don’t think it’s done enough to actually pick up this point. Another draw.

    Memory & Storage

Both the smart phones are hard to tell apart when it comes to memory. Both of them come with 2 GB of RAM and allow you to effortlessly switch between apps. I mean they are so smooth you won’t even think you’re own a phone. Storage is a little limited with the LG G2 though. It doesn’t offer expandable memory and comes with either 16 or 32 GB of inbuilt storage. This doesn’t seem too fancy in front of the Galaxy S4 that comes in 16, 32 and 64 GB versions and also supports memory expansion up to an additional 64 GB. Personally, I haven’t quite understood how you can fill up so much space on a smart phone. I mean what would you store?

I will call this one a draw since 32 GB of storage is more than enough for most smart phone users. That’s three in a row now.

    Camera

If you look at the camera on the back of both these smart phones you can all but prove they are exactly the same. Both smart phones come with 13 MP cameras on the back and include handy features like HDR mode, geo tagging, digital zoom, digital image stabilization, panorama, etc. Is there anything more you can expect out of your smart phone camera? Well it seems there is as the LG G2 records full HD videos at 60 fps which is double the Galaxy S4 which records at 30 fps. I don’t know how much of a difference will show in recorded videos but it’s something worth mentioning now isn’t it?

Even this isn’t enough to push either smart phone in front of the other.

    OS & Performance

This is the point where LG races in front. The LG G2 is the perfect example of the next generation of smart phones with its Quad Core, 2260 MHz, Krait 400 processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 chip. I’m pretty sure this is the first smart phone with such advanced technology in it and you can’t really blame the Galaxy S4 with its Quad Core, 1900 MHz, Krait 300 processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 APQ8064T chip for coming in second. Even in terms of graphics processors, the LG G2 comes with an Adreno 330 processor which will obviously be better than the Adreno 320 on the Galaxy S4. Both these smart phones run on the latest Android operating system JellyBean 4.2.2 although I’m sure LG would have preferred if they could get their hands on a never before used operating system for this smart phone.

This point clearly goes to the LG G2.

    Battery

The LG G2 is a little heavier than the Galaxy S4 and about 1 mm thicker as well. That isn’t too much is it? But it does have a 3,000 mAh battery which promises a much longer battery life as compared to the Galaxy S4 which comes with a 2,600 mAh battery than has a stand by time of 15.4 days. The LG G2 does lack wireless charging though I don’t think that would dampen too many spirits.

This point is another draw since both phones have their own pros and cons in this point.

    Price

And finally the price. The Galaxy S4 starts from $ 690 while if rumors are to be believed the LG G2 is going to cost between $ 600 and $ 630 depending on whether you want the 16 or 32 GB versions. If these rumors are true, I think LG is going to grab a huge chunk of the market share from the big players. I mean, it offers such advanced technology at such a cheap price.

The LG G2 picks up this point subject to the rumors being true.

    (LG G2 - Two / Samsung Galaxy S4 - Zero)

    Conclusion

There you have it, the LG G2 is truly a next generation smart phone. It seems the Samsung Galaxy S4 is getting old now and Samsung needs to release a new smart phone soon if they want to remain among the top cell phone manufacturers in the future. Maybe the Samsung Galaxy Note III will save them? All we can do is waiting and see. But for now, the LG G2 clearly beats the Samsung Galaxy S4.
