This tutorial will teach you how to root the Qualcomm-based Samsung Galaxy S4. Thus, the following rooting method will work for the version numbers SGH-i337 (AT&T), SPH-L720 (Sprint), SGH-M919 (T-Mobile), as well as for the Canadian versions from TELUS, Rogers or Bell carriers and any other Qualcomm-based SGS4s for that matter.
Read This First
- The following rooting procedure is intended only for the mentioned Samsung Galaxy S4 models; if you attempt the same method on a different Galaxy S4, you may end up bricking your device!
- Your smartphone should be at least 75% charged when you begin the rooting process.
- Back up your most important data and files.
- Download and install the necessary files before you begin.
- Rooting your device will void its warranty, so proceed at your own expense. You can however restore its warranty later on by installing an official ROM.
- We are not to be hold responsible if for whatever reason you end up bricking your device.
Necessary Downloads
- Download and install Samsung Galaxy S4 Windows drivers (for Windows users only).
- Download the Motochopper zip.
- A micro-USB cable.
Rooting Your Samsung Galaxy S4
- On your Samsung Galaxy S4, go to Settings -> tap More -> tap About device -> hit the build number for approximately 5-10 times until you receive the Developer mode has been enabled message.
- Now press the Back key once, and under Date and time, there should now be a new menu called Developer options -> tap that new menu.
- Now turn Developer options and USB Debugging to ON.
- Next you need to connect your Samsung Galaxy S4 to your computer via the micro-USB cable.
- When you see the Allow USB debugging prompt on your smartphone, tap OK. In case you dont see the prompt yet, skip this step.
- For Windows users, on your computer go to Device Manager and check to see if you have something called Samsung ADB interface (or any other ADB interface). If you dont see the interface, you probably havent downloaded and installed the Samsung Galaxy S4 Windows drivers yet, so do it now. Mac and Linux users dont need to install the drivers, so skip this step.
- Now, if you havent already, download and unzip the Motochopper zip.
- To start the rooting script, Windows users should double-click the run.bat file.
- Mac and Linux users need type in:
cd Downloads/motochopper
cd motochopper
chmod 755 *
sudo sh run.sh
- And then press Enter to being the rooting process.
- In case you skipped step 4 (When you see the Allow USB debugging prompt on your smartphone, tap OK), you should now see the Allow USB debugging prompt on your Samsung Galaxy S4 -> tap OK.
- During the rooting process, you will see a window pop-up asking to Verify apps, make sure you tap Agree.
- When the smartphone is done verifying the apps, tap Done and your SGS4 will root and reboot.
- Congratulations! You managed to root your Galaxy S4.
- After successfully rooting your device, you should see an app called Superuser in your apps.
