Re: Samsung Rant (M540) mp3 ringtones from sd card
Just a heads-up to those of you on the Sprint/Nextel Network, I tried doing all these things to just get ANY 3rd party ringtones onto my phone(doesn't matter model) with no success. I was advised by Sprint and other 3rd party vendors that Sprint blocks or filters any attempt of transfer of outside ringtones. I guess the transmission must go through their servers prior to being sent to your device and they trap them there. They want you to buy from them and their vendors only, but they say it's for their consumers protection.

Re: Samsung Rant (M540) mp3 ringtones from sd card
Seems to be a lot of confusion on this issue. Here's what I've been able to find:
- I don't know if Heinreken is correct that using websites to create/upload ringtones doesn't work, but I suspect he's wrong. He's certainly wrong that it's not possible to upload free ringtones. I've done it, using the microSD card provided with every Samsung Rant. (That is, BTW, the subject of this topic.)
- I refuse to pay the phone company price for ringtones. I'll rip one of my own CDs or purchase the track from iTunes, thank you very much.
- For jordDAWG, who's looking for free Mac software: I dunno about free. I use a Mac; the instructions that follow will work for Windows users as well. A free Mac audio converter I've used doesn't appear to be available any longer, but iConvertX (see MacUpdate dot com) is cheap. Also look at MP3 Trimmer, which will help reduce the size of the MP3 before conversion and allow you to select the start and end of the ringtone. Not free, but very useful. I've paid for both.
- If you pull the microSD card from the phone, put it into the SD card adapter that came with the Rant, put it into your card reader and (if necessary) plug the reader into your computer, you can transfer files to and from the card. No need for a website or SMSing it to yourself. (After going that route, I also used Bluetooth -- using the Bluetooth File Exchange application on the Mac -- and USB -- putting the phone into Mass Storage mode -- to transfer files. Much easier, once you know how to do it.)
- Simply changing the file's extension to .3g2 doesn't change the format, folks! That will work for a file changed from .mp3 to .3g2, but the audio doesn't sound as good as a real 3G2 and the file size is much bigger, too. Use a converter!
- When I used iConvertX, it would only convert to .3gp. At that point I changed the extension to .3g2. For my sample file, the size went from 80KB (MP3) to 16KB (3GP).
- There's no need to use any special naming convention (@Pandabear1986) and spaces are fine in the name (@Logan1987). I had no trouble with any filename showing up (as long as it was a .3g2) and ringers did not revert to the default.
- The ringer must be placed in the "100SSMED" folder in the "DCIM" folder on the microSD card (or the phone). (Thanks, toasted1!) That's where the phone will look in the next step.
- To use a specific ringtone with a specific contact on the Rant, press Contacts > the contact (OK) > the ringer (OK) > Change (OK) > My Videos (OK) > In Phone / In Memory card (OK) > the ringer (OK). The ringer will be saved to the phone.
- You can only use these ringtones for Incoming calls, not messages (of any type).
Your mileage may vary, but that's what worked for me.

Re: Samsung Rant (M540) mp3 ringtones from sd card
okay, i've followed all of the instructions in this thread, but i still can't get it to work. when i go to select the file in my videos folder, i get a message saying "saving to phone please wait!" then "entering a spring service area," then the screen goes black for a second and when it comes back on it's at the main menu and my file is still not assigned as the ringer. when i look at the file info the phone says "unknown file type." i tried renaming it to SSPX0001.3g2 and it still says "unknown file type." what do i do now?

Re: Samsung Rant (M540) mp3 ringtones from sd card
[QUOTE=Heinreken;1344819]
If you are pissed off about not getting free ringtones on your Samsung Rant, don't ever buy a Samsung phone or 3g phone again.
end quote!
I was able to download ringtones for free onto my Rant...I was one of the first posts to this forum discussion in 2008 and the suggestion I received worked for me. I don't really remember what all I did to get it done but I was able to. I currently have many songs that I got for free and I know I utilized iTunes (I have an iPod so I converted some of my own songs); I have my ringtones now saved in iTunes for the purpose of downloading to my phone. I just don't remember exactly what I did to do it. I love my Rant other than the problem of pressing re-dial on unstored numbers calls my voicemail instead which I have to fix by taking out the battery; this solves the problem for only a short period of time.
But it is possible to download free ringtones to the Samsung Rant but it's obviously not an easy thing to do.

Re: Samsung Rant (M540) mp3 ringtones from sd card
What this guy said worked for me first try no problems. I guess I'll reiterate what he said just for clarity's sake.
1. Find the MP3 you want to make your ringtone
2. Put it in a folder on your computer
3. Use Extention Changer to chagne the file from an MP3 file to a .3g2 file (this is a video format)
4. Rename the file SSPX****.3g2 (I used SSPX0502.3g2)
5. Hook your phone up to your PC
6. Access the drive via your pc and navigate to the DCIM/100SSMED folder and drop the .3g2 file in here.
7. Disconnect your phone from the PC
8. Go to Settings - Sounds - Ringer Type - Incoming calls - With Caller ID - My Videos - In Memory Card
9. A screen showing the videos that you have recorded/downloaded will appear. Select the one with the giant red X and click assign.
If this fails, I dunno what to tell you, It worked just fine for me and now my "I WANNA KNOW WHERE DA GOLD AT" ring tone can get me beaten up by black people so yea, pretty sweet.
If you guys want me to post another post on how to rip songs off youtube so you can put them right on your phone, I'd be more than glad to but only if you request because it'll take awhile to type out.

Re: Samsung Rant (M540) mp3 ringtones from sd card
I have this same problem, no data plan with sprint, and a macbook. The answer is easy once you figure it out but getting there was way more complicated than it should have been. I make my own ringtones using songs i buy from itunes and crop them using garageband. Then I import it back to itunes to make it easier to find. For Macs I found a free demo of aimersoft (iskysoft) conversion software that works just fine. Select the files you want to converted and change them to .3g2 files. After they are converted I tried using bluetooth to put them on my phone. This didn't work so I dug out the usb cable. Connect your phone to your computer and then find the converted files and drag them into the dcim folder and then to the 100SSMD folder. Disconnect phone from computer. I have found the converted files in Photos under "My Albums". The image will come up black with a red "X" but they still play. If it says it will not play, hook your phone back up to the computer, delete the file, start over again with converting and moving the files to your phone. When you convert, do the files one by one and put them on your phone one by one. It may be time consuming but it's worked for me.

Re: Samsung Rant (M540) mp3 ringtones from sd card
I had the same problem and tried different things and one thing worked out for me.
Try to record a video file and save it on your SD card.
then go to the ringer and set the newly recorded video file as your default ringer with caller ID. now saving to phone should work fine.
after this worked out, try to save your ringtones as your ringer for your contacts. and go back to the default ringer and change it to some other song.
hope this work for you.
