It is a T-Mobile Sidekick, right? Which prepaid service are you trying to use it with? If it's T-Mobile, your internet/t-zones should already be set-up.

Yes, you can purchase a SK2 online, then go into a T-Mobile authorized retailer and purchase the sim card. You can buy either, prepaid or contract, but with a contract some stores require you to take one of their phones. In this case, take the free phone(if there's one) and swap the sim card into your SK2. For the internet, since the SK is a T-Mobile phone, it should already be ready to use.

You'd need the SK prepaid plan, which you get unlimited e-mail, Web browsing, domestic instant messaging, and domestic text messaging for $1 per day, and spend only $0.15 per minute for nationwide calls. Some retailers offer just the T-Mobile prepaid starter kits without a phone, which maybe a cheaper route.

The SK SIM is the same as a regular Tmobile SIM. The cheapest place to get one is on ebay for less then $10 shipped. That way you don't have to buy a phone just to get a SIM, or overpay at a B&M store. You just have to call Tmobile CS and have them switch the SIM over to the prepaid SK plan. You must have a low balance on the prepaid account in order to get it switched over to an SK plan.

To set up the internet on a prepaid Sidekick, it's advisable to contact the customer service of your service provider. They can provide you with the necessary instructions and settings to ensure a smooth internet connection. Reach out to the customer service team via phone or online support to receive assistance specific to your device and prepaid plan. They are there to help you navigate the setup process and address any questions or concerns you may have.
