Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) is a voice encoding technology that will boost the quality of calls in the future for GSM and UMTS customers. Requirements for the mobile transmissions is not affected although the bandwidth for the calls is doubled.
“AMR Wideband technology delivers voice quality that was hitherto unknown. The technology therefore gives T-Mobile an excellent chance to further improve quality from a customer standpoint, and to boost customer satisfaction for the long term,” says Klaus-Jürgen Krath, Vice President RAN Engineering at T Mobile International. “The field trial has produced key findings from which we stand to benefit when we deploy the technology in our network in the future.”
Recently, a trial was conducted by T-Mobile in Cologne and Hamburg. Sony Ericcson phones were handed out to 150 customers that make frequent calls. 70 percent of them said the quality of their calls improved to a 'major degree'. This also increased customer satisfaction. From a mobile carrier standpoint, this leads to longer phone calls.

    Re: AMR Wideband T-mobile Test

Would you need a specific type of phone, or would it benefit all t-mobile customers? I'm assuming the latter.
