O2 now has UK's largest Subscriber Base

News by Mike Ellis on Tuesday January 24, 2006.

O2 has become the UK's largest network service provider by customer count after reporting an amazing 2005 holiday quarter. 895,000 new subscriber's were enticed by O2's "double minutes and texts" promotion on a contract tariff, and their ever popular Genie pre-pay system, where the user can receive 300 free texts per month if £10 (US $17.90) per month is spent. Its customer base has now been totalled at 16 million within the UK alone and 27.4 million worldwide.

O2 has also seen its annual rate at which it loses customers to other networks fall by 3% to 27%. This was aided by O2's reward system for existing customers. New technology has also played a part. O2's iMode service has seen steady growth. iMode enables the user to view specially formatted web pages on specific handsets.

O2 said they were "particularly pleased" with its latest results. Their network, which also includes one million Tesco customers as well as Three's voice network calls, has seen an impressive rise in demand in Europe's toughest market. This makes happy reading for Telefonica after their takeover bid was accepted for an estimated £18 billion (US $32 billion).

According to figures released last year, there were 63.6 million mobile phone subscriptions in the UK, in a country of 59.8 million people.
