Motorola use to be a very good quality cellphone supplier. My first cellphone is Motorola one with Rogers. But recently, I heard many bad comments from my friends about Motorola phones that has problem in a few months. Similar bad comments for LG. Hence, what remains are Nokia, SonyEriccson or Siemens. Don't just listen to me, hear comments from your friends around you.

So where should I go to buy these phones? when I go to the Fido store or most small independent they all give me an evil grin and try to ticket me :0( ( not going to happen) what are these unlocked phones? are they good and how do they work exactly and what if you have a sim card and you buy a unlocked telus phone with no sim capabilities?

When you get a phone from your provider, it usually will be locked so that it can only work when it is registered/activate with their service. Unlocking means to unlock the phone so that it can be activated with other service provider. If you are not thinking of signing a contract and are willing to pay the full retail price for the phone, it is in your best interest to buy an unlocked one so that you can change your service provider anytime you like.

Telus is using CDMA instead of GSM and that is why their phones don't come with SIM card. If you buy a CDMA phone, you cannot use service provider such as Fido and Rogers since they are using GSM.

When you buy GSM phones, make sure it has 850/1900 band as they are the only two bands used in Canada and US. 900/1800 are used in other part of the world such as Asia and Europe. Some tri-band phone has 900/1800/1900 and you can only use 1900 here and can't take advantage of the new 850 band and hence you can't get the best reception. If you travel a lot and would like to get multi-band phones, get the quad band one that has everything 850/900/1800/1900.
