OK, I had the i80 which had the voice recorder as a menu option, and I used
it a lot, just a few button clicks. Now I have the i58sr, better-built, much
better battery life, but voice recorder is no longer an option. They do have
a vReminder which you can get as a java app, but by the time you access it,
well, it just takes a lot longer (especially when you're driving, the old
one I could do w/out looking, this one requires many more keystrokes).
Maybe I'll get used to it, I don't know, but I sure wish that I had the
voice record option on the i58sr that I had on the 80. Maybe I'll just
return it for another phone, though I like the gps capability and the fact
that it's a much more solid phone (not as afraid to drop)! I would even pay
them the $7 extra if I could have the same feature, but vReminders is not
the same as the old voice record. Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you want something high-powered, try http://nextmail.com/
You register, get a special Direct Connect address and your set to go.
The only drawback is you need to go to a computer with audio to
retreive your messages. I use it to email voice notes to myself
during the day and it is slick. I can dictate messages up to 5
minutes long - as many as I want.

Make that "a computer with Windows Media Player". *Morons*. But then,
anyone who could find a use for that pretty useless looking service would
probably be someone who thinks Windows is a pretty neat idea. Except for
exactly what you're using it for.
Now, give me an Internet program *that is a Nextel radio *console* -- that's
something I'd pay cash for.

It e-mails you the audio files. You don't have to log into their webpage to
access the messages.

No, but the page *does* say that you need WMP plugins to play the files.
As far as I can see, other than note-taking, it's a service not suited to
single-user operation. Now, if you ran a gas-price website, and publicized
your NextMail DCID on the site, and people used it to report prices to you,
or something like that, yeah...
But for the market they appear to be targeting? Doesn't seem real useful to
me...

I am a consultant for all types of wireless services. I use it to
send myself notes when I am driving (and in Seattle you get stuck in
traffic a lot). I have other people I work with that I have set up
with DCIDs (you can set up something like 30) and I send them voice
notes as well. I don't have to fill up their voice mail and I can
leave detailed messages up to 5 minutes. If I am working with a
customer on a large project I will set them up as well.
I have customers that are in construction, for example, and they send
in "punch lists" to the office to be transcribed. I work with
in-field wholesale sales companies that enter orders using it. I
guess you have to think outside the box to see it's value, but I
wouldn't be without it. It saves me many $$$ each day.
