I have 3 Nokia 1221 Tracfones in my family. I have been generally
satisfied with the service, except for the phone I use which has
developed an annoying habit of turning itself off. Even with a full
battery charge, I will look at the phone and it will be blank as if I
had shut off the power, when it had just been on minutes before. This
has happened often enough that I have even occassionally seen it go
    blank.

I have reported this to Tracfone customer service, and they have
replaced the phone TWICE trying to solve the problem. So I must
conclude it is not related to a specific physical phone. Each time
that has changed my phone number, so it is not related to my phone
number. I have tried banging an shaking the phones, and that has never
caused them to turn off. Yet it just keeps randomly turning itself off
with no sound or warning. Other than continuing to replace the phones,
Tracfone has been no help with this problem. Anyone who has dealt with
Tracfone customer service knows how generally helpless they are.

I have noticed that it happens much more often when I am roaming than
when I am in my home region, and it is much more likely if the phone is
moving (such as in a car, or on a bike). It does not seem related to
mechanical motion of the phone, but rather moving through different
signal regions. It is as if certain signal areas cause the phone
    software to crash and shutdown.

I have also tried contacting Nokia, and they just gave me the useless
    advice to contact Tracfone.

As often as this occurs to me (at least every 2-3 days), I have a hard
time believing I am the only one experiencing this problem. Yet a
Google search on Nokia 1221 Tracfones turning themselves off comes up
    empty.

Has anyone else had this problem with a Nokia 1221 Tracfone or have any
other suggestions on how to solve it?

I have had two TracFone Nokia 5180i models that have turned themselves off
before, but usually its just a reset. Its not a real problem in my case
because it nearly always turns itself back on. I leave my 5180i on all the
time and I catch it resetting itself about once a week.

I am not positive about this, but I notice when it occurs its usually at top
of hour or 15 mins after the hour. What I should do leave my my ICOM 7100
General coverage receiver tuned to 832.882 MHz (CDMA) and hopefully catch
the phone transmitting when it does a "location update" to the tower to see
if its related to the reset. That would indicate its related to the phone
swtiching to transmit mode after a hour or two period of receive only.

I suspect its related to an internal self test that discovers a parity
error, and resets the phone. I use to think the network sends a reset
signal, but that is just a theory.

The 5180i will, about once a week, reset itself or reboot. Its turns off,
and then it turns itself back on second or two later.

I haven't a clue what causes it. I agree with you its not phone or model
specific, since I've seen two different Nokia 5180i TracFones do it, and you
have a Nokia 1221 that does it.

I also have a Nokia 1100 TracFone that I have never seen do this.

Re: Nokia 1221 Tracfone Turns Itself Off

I just got my 1221 from Trac fone and it is doing the same thing. It
shuts off after about 5 minutes. I called trac fone and the woman was a
minimal help, but she did suggest doing a system reset of the phone. I
hope this works. Maybe they sent me one of your old phones!

If anyone knows of a fix send it out.
