I have to buy a few new PDA-like cellphones or smartphones in the next month. I want the ultimate. The treo 700w looks good. Read some people talking about motorola's Q. Any other great new phones I should wait for? What are your guys' opinions?

maybe specify which carrier you are using.

it makes a huge difference if you're on cingular/t-mobile vs. verizon.

or better yet, post your ? directly in your service provider's forum.

Well that's a good point... I'm currently with sprint, but not entirely happy. My contract for 5 phones runs out jan 4, so it's an excellent opportunity to try another provider. Especially if they are the only ones support a phone I really want for everyone (like verizon with the treo 700w).

Basically, what is the best new phone... regardless of provider.

fyi,

make your decision based on the carrier, not the phone. a gsm carrier (ie. cingular/t-mobile) may not work for you like it does for me.

check the coverage areas, where you travel, etc. then scope out the available phones.

I'm in miami, florida. Don't travel much. Verizon, sprint and cingular work great all around south florida from what I hear.

I'm wanting to get the audiovox PPC-6700 after much research. It looks to be the best phone out there. Fast cpu, big ram, great screen, small when closed, large keyboard when expanded. Reviews for it seem to be much higher than the treo and others.

I'm test driving this animal right now (alongside the Treo 650 & Blackberry 7105T) and I'm mostly happy with it.

Conceptually, I really like the 6700 but being a long time Palm user, there's something of a learning curve, and of course it's a different look and feel.

I'm running into some snags when trying to sync with my ACT! (v6) contact manager. I have ~4500 customers in my database and the initial sync took forever. Updates are not so bad. I'm using Companionlink 2.0 and have been getting some bizarre errors from ActiveSync. Clicking "ok" through the errors eventually allows the sync to continue, but it's clear that something's not quite right (and that "something" could just be a configuration issue I need to change).

Searching for a contact is noticably slower on the 6700 than on the Treo. I've come across a few forums with some tweaks that will supposedly help but I haven't tried them yet. Also, I had to completely disable the Notes/History sync since just the 3 most recent items made the performance absolutely unbearable. The Treo is a lot quicker with the same 4500 contacts. If you have a smaller database, the performance of the 6700 will probably be acceptable.

I think it's still a little buggy, but hopefully the updates will address these concerns (cuz I really DO want to like this device even more than I do now!).

You may just want to go and try one out for a few days. Right now I'm evaluating Cinguar (Treo 650), Verizon (Treo 650), T-Mobile (BB 7105T) & Sprint (PPC-6700).

Despite the quirks with the 6700, I'm still leaning in Sprint's direction mainly due to their coverage in my area, and the flexibility of their shared plans (like you, I have a few other phones I need to bring over).

Thanks for the info Ralph! great review you sent me... hopefully by the time I get my phone (in a couple weeks) I'll have one with a newer rom? Is it typical for phone companies to offer rom updates you can download?
