Hi all; is it possible for someone to hack a cellphone? More specifically, how would I know if a cellphone has been hacked and what steps can be taken to counteract it? I know there are programs out there that let people spy on cellphones, but as far as I know they have to be installed manually into the phone...

I've got a MetroPCS phone on my hands which comes up with the following problems, among others:

    1. Camera comes on for no reason
    2. People will call but when the phone is answered, you get a dial tone instead of someone on the line (dial tone on a cellphone is kind of weird to begin with)

OK, I can't think of any of the other things off the top of my head.. it's not my phone, so I can get a more comprehensive list later, but you get the idea..

We took it to the Metro store and had it reset. The rep was weirded out about the problems on the phone but didn't know what else to do. After the reset, the problems resumed. Had problems in the past with a stalker ex with computer network tech guru skills so that's why we're wondering now and just want to eliminate the possibility. If anyone's got any ideas, please let me know, and thanks everyone...

    Re: Cellphone compromised?

    1. Is their a button on the outside of the phone for the camera that could be randomly pushed?
    2. Could just be metropcs messing up, I know every once in a while my metropcs will not complete a call(normally when I am calling out to someone).

I highly doubt anyone is "hacking" your phone, they would have to have access to said phone and even then would have to know a lot about cell phones and the operating system. Just out of curiosity what kind of phone is it?

Hi, thanks for the response. It's one of those Samsung r430 MyShot clamshells, so the camera button's not on the outside (I think). No one's had access to the phone, so it's just weird. Is it normal for a phone to call its own voicemail system and then make three failed attempts to access the voicemail system? I'm inclined to believe no hacking is going on, but the other day we logged into the voicemail and it said our own number had called the voicemail system and tried to gain access and failed. Thanks again...

hmmm well now that I see this is a flip phone this is very odd, at first i just figured it was pushing random buttons in someone pocket or something along those lines. See if you can get metro to replace the phone if you are having odd problems like these.
