I'll apologize in advance if there is a million threads on this issue, but I want to explain my situation to get the best response.
I've used Sprint for about 2 years, and it's time for me to upgrade to a newer phone. I was looking at getting a Palm Centro, but however on my current Sprint plan I have three big problems.
1. I need to upgrade to a data plan which I have no use for.
2. The CDMA network is a battery hog for the Sprint Centro (the AT&T GSM version gets roughly 40% more talk time according to CNET).
3. I don't like contracts, and it would be better to buy an unlocked phone outright from PalmOne price wise.
I've went over to Sprint and they told me (as I would of figured) that the GSM phone will not work on Sprint. Well, alright...So I think about it and because I only use the phone for emergencies to go prepaid. Before anyone gets onto me on "Why get a smart phone if you're not going to email" it is because I am very familiar with Palm OS and it would serve as a replacement to my Palm IIIxe (which still fully functions, but it is only at OS 4.1 and only a 20MHz Dragonball CPU...Although since 5.4.9 lacks Note Pad I'll still use the IIIxe for college use).
From what I've read, I'll need an unlocked SIM card because a regular SIM will lock after a while if not used on the right phone. A RadioShack representative told me if I bought a GoPhone and removed the SIM card AT&T would deactivate it over a month.
Although, opinion wise, would you spend $100 for a contract phone or $300 for an unlocked one?
Edit: I also just recently looked up SIM cards on eBay and came across a new 3G 64k AT&T card that says it will work on Prepaid...Is this true?

Re: Prepaid SIM questions...
I also have a question regarding this topic. I have been a faithful user of T-Mobile pre-paid for about two years now and have only good things to say! I still have the original Samsung T319 and I am overdue for an update in the phone department.
I am not a technical person to say the least so I am looking for advice:
- Can I use the SIM in my pre-paid phone and use it in any T-Mobile phone?
- Can I use the SIM in my pre-paid phone and use it in any "unlocked" phone regardless of carrier?
- Can it be used in a smart phone? I would imagine that I would need more than the SIM card from my pre-paid phone in order to take advantage of all the features of the phone (i.e. e-mail, web browsing, etc.)?
I apologize for the remedial questions, but I need to start somewhere. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Prepaid SIM questions...
Thanks so much! Are there any prepaid plans that are better for data?
