Asurion cell phone insurance is a rip off....Dont get it.....I have Verizon and was offered Asurion insurance on my cell phone in case my phone broke, or was stolen, etc. Anyway I think the service is a total rip off....Dont get it and I will tell you why.....

    1) Cost of Asurion insurance.....$5.00 a month.

    2) If you make a claim they make you pay $50.00

    3) Once you do a claim and you get a new phone you must send back your old phone (with the battery) within 15 days or they can charge you up to $300.00.

    4) The customer service sucks.

Now let me explain this better for you.....lets say your cell phone craps out 14 months into your plan...14 months x $5.00 a month equals...$70.00. Now $70.00 plus the $50.00 fee they charge you equals $120.00. Thats almost as much as a new phone already. But wait.....

Dont forget you gotta send your old broken phone back in with the battery...It does not take a moron to realized that they referbish the old phones and put new cheap plastic housings on the phones and resell em. Probably the batteries too. How much do ya think the old cell phone is worth to the refurbish company....? $15, $25?, $40? While they resell it for probably at least $90 to $175. Which you originally paid $150.00 for.

Oh and dont forget to send in that old phone, if you dont, thats an extra $300.00

And lastly, the customer service sucks.....Oh the reps you talk to are very nice dont get me wrong, but I was disconnected once, put on hold several times....Told the wrong information.....(Guy told me that the $50.00 went towards extra months on your Asurion insurance plan, next person I talked to said that was not true and it was just a service fee)

So all and all you end up paying about $150.00 for your new phone, while they turn around fix the old one and resell your phone as a new or refurbished one (I am only guessing about this but is probably the case).....If your phone does not break for longer....You end up paying even more. Worst case senario you forget to send in your broken phone and could end up paying like $450.00.

The only good things about this service is that you pay no shipping costs, Or did I? and I got a new phone by the next day.

I thought insurance was suppost to help your wallet, not not burn a hole in it. Its an Assurance, that youll be getting scammed with Asurion insurance.

Alright, now lets say your phone "craps out" after two months: Well you have had to pay $10 in monthly fees, and a $50 deductible which comes out to around $60. Now if they charged me $300 for forgeting to send my phone back, that is something I or almost anyone wouldn't forget to do. Okay so, total is $60 that I have to pay, now a new phone most likely would cost more than $150 if you buy it from straight from Verizon, but lets just go with your theory. So all in all I'm saving $90 dollars by having phone insurance.

    Hmmmm....

Chris Im not sure I really understand your logic......Personally If I had to spend $60 extra dollars just two months after spending $199.00 for the new phone....Id be even more angry than paying the $120.00 14 months after signing onto the plan. I think if the phone craps out that early in the game you should get a new phone for free. Heck thats the way it works when you buy electronics at any department store....98% of the time you get at least a year warrenty on tvs, stereos, etc. Why not cell phones too? But I can understand why you are backing up Asurion....I bet you make more money each time you get someone to sign up an Asurion plan. Anyway Im not the only person who thinks Asurion is a scam, take a look at these links...

I hope these links I just posted above arent deleted by this server....Sometimes they do this on forums, do a search if they are......There was another one I found yesterday that I cannot seem to locate right now that claimed that asurion sent some guy a used phone with scratches on it, that didnt work when he got it...Which seems to prove my theory on why they absolutely need my old cell phone...Or just read about the class action lawsuit, 3rd link down which says it all....The courts contend that cell phone insurance coverage is deceptive because consumers often receive cheap, used or refurbished phones as replacements.......

Anyway, look Chris....I really dont hate Asurion but when I had to pay $50.00 it kinda pissed me off....and I felt like I was dealing with a bunch of liers when the guy at customer service says the $50.00 went towards further coverage of my insurance. I did get a new working phone very quickly though, and that I am happy about.

Well 1st of all, cell phones do come with a 1 year manufactured warranty. So if the cell phone has a technical defection, most likely they will replace it for FREE! Now lets say they didn't make you pay a deductible if you lose, break, or your phone gets stolen. Well what someone could do is just tell the company that they lost their phone(when they really didn't) and then they would just have to send the customer a new free phone with out paying anything, like a deductible for example. Okay, so now you have two phones for one price. Now maybe if your phone breaks and you pay a deductible, it might be nice if they refund your deductible if you send in your old phone. As for the rep. that lied to you, stuff like that will happen which I don't like either, thats why everytime I have to deal with any CS I always call back to a different rep. Now the only reason a replied to your post in the 1st place was because you were stating the absolute worst-case scenario instead of what I think is the most likely.

Include Signal as another agent of fraud

Asurion doesn't have anything over Signal Insurance in the fraud business. I can't believe what I have just gone through the last few days with signal insurance. My Motorola phone was damaged and, of course, US Celluar said call signal and get your phone replaced. After an hour on the phone explaining everything twice to the agent I was told they would send me a replacement. After waiting four days I checked the website address they sent me. There I find a claim that there is an equipment mismatch. Then they reject my claim. No email, no phone call, nothing. So I contact them again. Turns out they claim they don't have the right EMD number for my phone. I call US Celluar and try to get it resolved. I find that US Celluar sent the right number to Signal but Signal won't accept US Celluar's own documentation!!! It is clear they don't want to honor this claim. THIS IS FRAUD!!! I recommend that if you are paying money for Signal insurance that you stop payment and put it in your own savings account. That is the only way you are ever going to see a replacement phone. DO NOT TAKE OUT CELL PHONE INSURANCE FROM SIGNAL!!!!

Actually no dealers, not even t-mobile reps, make any money when somebody signs up for asurion.

T-Mobile offers a 1 year manufacturer warranty. The warranty covers manufacturer flaws only. If you're phone is not physically damaged, you do get a free replacement. If it is physically damaged you do not get a free replacement. You do not get to wet, break, or crack your TV, radio, or dvd player and take it back to the store for a free replacement either.

It sucks that the Verizon rep didn't let you know about the deductible. I always let my customers know ahead of time about the deductible because I know it will factor into their decision of wether or not to get insurance for their phone.

Some like phone insurance for peace of mind or because they spent $300-400 on a phone.

Just another idea. Save the money you would spend on premiums and deductables. In the event you lose your phone buy another one on Ebay and spend a lot less. Cingular and Tmobile can switch for free with the switch of a SIM. Same carrier branded or unlocked phone, of course. Verizon should do an ESN swap for another phone for free. If you lose or break your phone there are inexpensive ways to replace it without insuring it.

And of course I agree. Insurance companies make replacements expensive in order to cut down on fraud.

Re: Asurion cell insurance isn a rip off.

Cell phone insurance is insurance. Probably over 90% of the people who get any insurance do not read their coverages. As with almost all insurances, there are options. For instance, with car insurance, most companies have a deductable to repair of replace your damaged or stolen car. For insurance to provide a "New" car, or have "No" deductable, you pay extra.

If you have a cell phone that is of lessor value, maybe insurance isn't for you but if you have a high end model and it is your life's blood, having insurance to have it replaced, even with a deductable, could make sense.

Some of the reasons given why insuring your cell phone are common sense. But saying that paying the monthly premium then having a deductable to replace your phone depends on the circumstance. For instance, if you pay car insurance for 10 years and never need to use it, is it wrong to have insurance? If that same car was stolen two months after you bought it, the price of insurance certainly is well worth it.

A cell phone is not a car. Gee, really? If you pay for insurance for a year for your phone and the phone gets old and the cost of replacing it becomes more than it is worth, then cancel the insurance. Just like having a car that you change the insurance from collision to comprehensive because it is not worth keeping the high rates on.

If you buy cell phone insurance, from any company, get the coverage certificate. If one is not provided when you get the coverage, ask the insurance company for a copy. Then read it. If the terms of the cover have limits of liability that you can't live with, cancel it. Knowledge is power and you can give yourself power by understanding what you are paying for.

If your phone was provided by the company that you have your service with, it may have been free or at a greatly reduced cost because you signed a committment contract for service. You might consider reading that too.

That's totally different though. That $98/month + $200 deductible covers you for liability up to tens of thousands of dollars, collision on your car worth approx $10K or more, property damage, damage to other cars etc. It's not the same as insuring a physical piece of property against breaking. Phones are not at risk of harming other phones the way cars can damage other cars (and people, and property).

If you don't insure your phone, the worst thing that can happen is that you have to buy a new one out of pocket. If you don't insure' your car, you could be liable for millions of dollars in damages if you are at fault for a crash that injures someone. The risks here are completely different. That's why insurance' for your car is worth it but phone insurance is not. The $50 deductible is a significant amount of what most phones are worth to begin with. The same is not true for the $200 deductible on your car premium.

Re: Asurion cell insurance is a rip off.

Do not purchase cell phone insurance. It is not only a waste of money but worst, if you ever do have to file a claim, it turns in to a nightmare you don't need. Please remember you will be dealing with a scumbag, bottom-feeding insurance company that your wireless company jobbed off the risk to.

My problems were with Asurion. It took about a month of delays on their part before I got my phone replaced (e.g., questionnaires, affidavites, notarizations, etc.). Yes, there is a maximum allowed per claim of $200 of which you pay $50 deductible (net, $150 covered by the scumbags). A year later, I filed another claim on a different phone and was flat-out denied. When my phone was stolen, I immediately switched my line to an old, obsolete phone laying in a drawer, in anticipation of a one-month delay by the scumbags. However, according to scumbags, that was the phone that they would be replacing, not the actual, more expensive one that was stolen. What the hey? Verizon did nothing to back me up on this.

One last point on insurance companies. The scumbags outspend all other industries when it comes to judiciary campaign contributions. Why? That was true for the 2008 as well as the 2006 elections.

Re: Asurion cell insurance isn a rip off.

Assurion is a rip off. We have T-mobile. We bought a motorolla click before christmas and the insurance since they were having problems at the time. I switched this phone with my son on a different line. The phone broke. We called assurance and they denied the claim because we moved the phone to a different line. I have 4 lines with assurance on them and 2 without. I was told by T-mobile that the insurance was for the phone. Assurance said the insurance is for the "sim card". They denied the claim because the sim card that was in the phone at the time of the accident did not have insurance. Also, before they verified the phone line they said my deductible was $130. I paid $136 for this phone because it had a rebate and I had a full upgrade.
It seems to me that they say whatever they want just to deny a claim. My mother also had an issue with a phone. It was only a month old and would not keep a charge. They sent her a used phone. This is not right to me.
I plan to cancle assurance on all my lines. I should have put all that money in a savings. At least I would have something to buy a new phone with. Also, T-mobile didn't inform me correctly on the terms and I did not receive any paperwork about it. I was under the assumption that T-mobile carried the insurance-not an outside company.
Keep your money. They find every reason not to pay a claim and the deductible is not $50!

seems that everty time some one posts something bad about asurion, some one steps in and blsts them for not understadnig how insurance works....we all know how insurence works...the problems is that asurion is underhanded in their bus practices and I hope a class action lawsuit firm finds these posts soon and starts a suit against asurion...there is obviously some one from asurion attacking people posting on this forum..

Re: Asurion cell insurance isn a rip off.

All Better Business Bureau complaints filed have been filed and resolved in Asurion's favor.

This goes to show you that they are doing their job correctly. The BBB, in all instances I have had, have always resolved the issue accordingly. Therefore, I find it hard to believe that the BBB would lie or favor Asurion for some reason.

This means that most people obviously do not know how insurance works and therefore are dissatisfied when it doesn't end the way they'd like...rarely does insurance with any company end with the customer's best interest in mind.

I'd also like to point out that many private insurance companies (like Allstate and State Farm) insure electronics (including wireless phones). Their insurance is much more expensive, but you also get much more. Like if you sign up for non-deductible insurance...you don't pay a deductible...same with if you sign up for a "new device replacement" insurance with them...you get a new device. Also, many home owner policies also will cover wireless electronics.
