Backing-up Your Files

A master reset will wipe all the downloaded applications or other content from your Nexus 4, including music, picture, videos, games, contacts stored in the memory of the device. Thus, it’s highly recommended that you back-up all the important files before performing the master reset.
Follow the next easy steps to copy the files from your smartphone to your computer via a USB cable:

1. Connect your Nexus 4 to a computer via the USB cable.
2. Select Media sync (or MTP).
3. On the computer, open the disk drive of your smartphone.
4. Go to the desired file and folder location.
5. Next, drag and drop the desired files to a new location on the computer.
6. Once you’re finished, disconnect the Nexus 4 from the Computer.

Performing a Master Reset


The master reset will restore the Nexus 4 to its original settings.

1. Back-up all the desired files.
2. From the Home screen, tap All apps.
3. Go to Settings -> Backup & reset -> select Factory reset - > in case your Nexus 4 is protected by a password, you’ll receive a prompt to enter the Pattern, Password or PIN.
4. Finally, tap Erase everything.

Performing a Master Reset via the Hardware Keys

In case your smartphone is unresponsive, or is locked or frozen and a normal master reset cannot be performed, you’ll be able to reset the device using the hardware keys:

1. Back-up the desired data.
2. Turn the device off.
3. Then press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down keys at the same time. Keep the buttons down for 10 seconds.
4. Then you should see a picture of an android lying on its back.
5. Next, press the Volume Down key two times until you see Recovery mode on the screen.
6. To restart in Recovery mode, press the Power key.
7. You will see a picture with an Android and a red triangle.
8. Now press both the Power key and the Volume Up key at the same time.
9. Go to wipe data/factory reset by using the Volume keys. To select, press the Power key.
10. Scroll down to Yes – erase all user data by using the Volume keys and press the Power key to select.

Performing a Soft Reset

By performing a soft reset, all your active programs will be shut down. This will help if your smartphone is running slower than usual.

1. First off, save any open file.
2. Press and hold the Power key and tap Power off.
3. Then press and hold the Power key to turn on your device again.

Wiping a Cache Partition to Clear System Memory

If your Nexus 4 is not working properly, it’s recommended that you reset it. A hard reset will delete all your information, but no personal data or setting will be deleted if you clear the system cache.

1. First off, back-up all your data.
2. Turn the smartphone off.
3. Then press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down keys at the same time. Keep the keys down for 10 seconds.
4. Then you will see a picture of an android lying on its back.
5. Next, press the Volume Down key two times until you see Recovery mode on the screen.
6. To restart in Recovery mode, press the Power key.
7. You will see a picture with an Android and a red triangle.
8. Now press both the Power key and the Volume Up key at the same time.
9. Use the Volume keys to go to wipe data cache partition. Press the Power key to select that option.
