Motorola cell phone batteries - shelf life in storage

Does one have information on how long a new battery for a Motorola Barrage cell phone remains good when in storage? A friend of mine has a spare battery that was shipped back in January 2011. It was stored in shipping wrapper but never charged. Would this battery still be good? Thanks,

January 2011? I'm guessing the battery is in desperate need of being charged. My laptop battery, for example, needs charging everytime I don't use the laptop for more than a few days. They drain slowly, but they drain.
