The Sony Xperia Z1 has finally been announced and the market is buzzing with news about its 20.7 MP camera. But is the Sony Xperia Z1 more than just a camera phone? Is it a true smart phone? Can it match up to flagship smart phones from other brands? Only time will tell. But for now, I am going to compare it with the Nokia Lumia 1020 which currently holds the position of the best camera phone. Will the Sony Xperia Z1 be able to topple the 41 MP giant from the top or will the good old Nokia triumph once again? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

I don’t often find Nokia Lumia smart phones that are lighter than their competitors. But that is exactly the case here. The Lumia 1020 weighs 158 g while the Xperia Z1 weighs 170 g. The Lumia 1020 is a whole 12 g lighter. I think that’s a first. In terms of size, the Lumia 1020 measures 130.4 x 71.4 x 10.4 mm and the Xperia Z1 measures 144.4 x 73.9 x 8.5 mm. The Xperia Z1 is thinner than the Lumia 1020 and when it comes to the length and width, both smart phones are pretty similar and the size difference can be attributed to the larger display of the Xperia Z1.

So, the Lumia 1020 is lighter and the Xperia Z1 is thinner. I guess this point will have to be a draw.

    Display

While the Xperia Z1 does have a larger 5.0” TFT display, the Lumia 1020 has a 4.5” AMOLED display. Now, keep in mind that the AMOLED display means the Lumia 1020 should have much better picture quality. But, the Xperia Z1 has a pixel density of 441 ppi as compared to the 334 ppi of the Lumia 1020 which makes a huge difference as well. In terms of maximum resolution, the Xperia Z1 inches ahead again with 1,920 x 1,080 pixels while the Lumia 1020 has just 1,280 x 768 pixels. The Lumia 1020 does have a scratch resistant glass and polarizing filter though which is lacking in the Xperia Z1.

So you see, it’s tough to pick a winner between the two for this point and therefore I’m going to call it a draw.

    Memory & Storage

Both smart phones come with 2 GB of RAM although the Xperia Z1 has a faster 800 MHz clocking speed as compared to the Lumia 1020 that has a clocking speed of 500 MHz. The Lumia 1020 falls behind because of its limited 32 GB of internal storage and lack of expandable storage. On the other hand, the Xperia Z1 has 16 GB of internal storage and storage expansion options up to 64 GB. What more could you want from a smart phone?

This point clearly goes to the Xperia Z1.

    Camera

This is the point where Nokia has been leaving the rest of the competition far behind. But will it be able to do the same here? The answer is yes! While the Xperia Z1 has an impressive 20.7 MP camera on the back, it isn’t that impressive when up against the 41 MP camera on the back of the Lumia 1020. The Lumia 1020 also has a Xenon flash to accompany its LED flash while the Xperia Z1 only has an LED flash.

I don’t even need to get into the details that much. This point clearly goes to the Lumia 1020.

    OS & Performance

While the Lumia 1020 runs on Microsoft’s latest operating system Windows Phone 8, the Xperia Z1 runs on the Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) operating system. There isn’t much to compare on that front. But in terms of performance, both smart phones are quite different. The Lumia 1020 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 chip and a dual core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor while the Xperia Z1 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 chip and quad core, 2200 MHz, Krait 400 processor. Even in terms of graphics, the Xperia Z1 is far ahead with an Adreno 330 processor as opposed to the Adreno 225 processor on the Lumia 1020.

While little can separate both smart phones in terms of operating systems, the Xperia Z1 is much better than the Lumia 1020 as far as hardware is concerned and that’s why it deserves this point.

    Battery

The Lumia 1020 really lets down users as far as the battery is concerned. Considering the fact that it’s a smart phone with a mammoth camera, it should have had a bigger battery. It comes with a 2,000 mAh battery that offers a standby time of just 16 days. But, the Xperia Z1 comes with a 3,000 mAh battery which boasts of a standby time of a whopping 36+ days.

Since this point is restricted to battery performance I will have to give the point to the Xperia Z1.

    Price

The Lumia 1020 can be picked up for $ 735 (free of contract) while there isn’t any official information regarding the pricing of the Xperia Z1 as yet.

I guess this point will have to be a draw.

    Conclusion

The Sony Xperia Z1 has proved that it clearly is the better smart phone while the Nokia Lumia 1020 has managed to retain its position as the best camera phone in the market today. Sony did do a pretty good job with the Sony Xperia Z1 and considering the fact that their smart phone is water and dust proof only adds to its list of many advantages. Which smart phone would you buy?
