The Apple iPhone 5S is a well built smart phone, but it doesn’t really have what it takes to be called one of the best smart phones in the world. There maybe some of you that disagree here. So what better way of putting all our doubts to rest than comparing it with one of the best smart phones in the market today, the Samsung Galaxy S4. Samsung has really improved their smart phones in the last few years, especially with the “Galaxy series” of smart phones. So which smart phone will come out on top? Let’s find out...

Size and weight

First of all, you need to remember that the Galaxy S4 has a much larger display. That being said, the Galaxy S4 measures 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm while the iPhone 5S measures 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm. In terms of weight, the Galaxy S4 weighs 130 g while the iPhone 5S weighs 112 g. It seems all smart phone manufacturers are working hard on improving their smart phones every year. But I must say, Apple really has some guts to make no improvements in the size and weight department after a whole year. And it’s not like they have improved too much on the other aspects either.

I’m going to call this point a draw since both smart phones make the maximum use of their size and weight.

Display

When it comes to the display, the Galaxy S4 has everything you could want out of a smart phone’s display while the iPhone 5S isn’t really that great. The Galaxy S4 has a 5.0” Super AMOLED touch screen while the iPhone 5S comes with a 4.0” IPS LCD touch screen. Even in terms of pixel density, the Galaxy S4 has a massive 441 ppi while the iPhone 5S has just 326 ppi. And when you compare the maximum resolution on both smart phones, the Galaxy S4 has a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels while the iPhone 5S has a maximum resolution of just 1,136 x 640 pixels.

This point definitely goes to the Galaxy S4. It is clearly the much better smart phone in terms of display.

Memory & Storage

Even when it comes to the memory and storage in both these smart phones, the Galaxy S4 is miles ahead of the iPhone 5S. It comes with 2 GB of RAM while the iPhone 5S comes with just 1 GB of RAM. How can Apple hope to release a high end smart phone with just 1 GB of RAM and still remain on top? It really can’t be done. And when it comes to storage, both smart phones are exactly the same. They both come with 16, 32 and 64 GB of internal storage. But the sad part is, the Galaxy S4 comes with expandable storage options up to 64 GB while the iPhone 5S has no expandable storage options. After all these years, they should have at least added expandable storage.

This point goes to the Galaxy S4 as well.

Camera

When you compare the cameras on both these smart phones, again the Galaxy S4 is superior to the iPhone 5S. Yes, the 8 MP shooter on the iPhone 5S does come with a Dual LED flash but that just isn’t enough when compared to the 13 MP camera on the Galaxy S4. The iPhone 5S does have some unique features like 720 p HD recording at 120 fps but the Galaxy S4 has a better all round camera with 1080 p video recording through both the front and rear camera. The Galaxy S4 has some handy little features as well like voice activation, smile detection and exposure compensation.

I know that many claim the iPhone 5S camera to be better but in my opinion the Galaxy S4 has a much better camera.

OS & Performance

The iPhone 5S comes with the latest Apple operating system, iOS 7 while the Galaxy S4 comes with Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean). The iPhone 5S comes with the latest Apple A7 chip and dual core, 1300 MHz, Cyclone processor while the Galaxy S4 comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 APQ8064T chip and quad core, 1900 MHz, Krait 300 processor. In terms of graphics, the iPhone 5S has a PowerVR G6430 processor and the Galaxy S4 has an Adreno 320 processor. Yes, Apple has impressed with its 64-bit technology. But I don’t know how they expect to stay on top with a 1300 MHz processor?

The Galaxy S4 may not have the best hardware in the market but it definitely has enough to trump the iPhone 5S. This point goes to the Galaxy S4 as well.

Battery

I have said it before, Apple really disappoints when it comes to battery life, but the sad part here is that Samsung (well known for their impressive battery life) doesn’t do too well here either. While the iPhone 5S comes with a 1,570 mAh battery that offers a standby time of 10.4 days, the Galaxy S4 comes with a 2,600 mAh battery and a standby time of 15.4 days. At a time where smart phones with 30+ days of standby time are fast becoming commonplace, both these smart phones don’t stand much of a chance when it comes to their batteries.

At the end of the day, the Galaxy S4 does have a better battery though and that is why it will pick up this point.

Price

You can pick up a 16 GB Galaxy S4 (free of contract) for something between $ 600 and $ 610 while you will have to spend $ 650 if you want to pick up a 16 GB iPhone 5S (free of contract). Seeing how this comparison has gone so far, I don’t think I have to justify which of these smart phones offers more value for money.

The Galaxy S4 wins this one as well.

Conclusion

With the score at an unbelievable 6 points to 0 the Samsung Galaxy S4 absolutely annihilates the Apple’s latest iPhone, the 5S. The Apple iPhone 5S does have the fingerprint scanner though which is quite innovative but when you look past that, I really don’t see why anyone would go for the iPhone 5S. Of course, diehard fans of the smart phone will stick with it. But if you have some sensitive information stored on your smart phone which someone else wants access to, at least you don’t have to worry about someone chopping off your finger (Or maybe even chopping off all your fingers if they don’t know which one to use).
