I just started with Sprint and purchased a LG Optimus and I was looking at the programs that are running and one of them is Sprint Messaging Widget and below it says MessagingService....If I stop that from constantly running to save battery power,is that going to mess up my text messaging?

yes it will. But there are other ways to reduce your batter power. But first, you got this phone for a reason, you can restrict services to save your battery, but why not just get another battery?
An external charger is $4.99 and an extra battery is like $7. www.cellphonehelp.org

Or the free way to increase your battery time is as follows (but I just bought an extra battery and charger):

    1) adjust your brighness to auto, this will dim your screen sooner when not in active use. It wont effect video playback, etc. menu>settings>Sounds and Display> check Auto Brightness

    2) or adjust your display brightness normally. I've taken mine down to the minimum and can see just fine. menu>settings>Sounds and Display> Birghtness- then just drag the bar to the far left.

    3) turn off backgroun data (this is the real killer of batteries)
Menu> Settings> Accounts and Sync> uncheck background data. Your apps will still check as often as you open them or set them (example my yahoo still checks mail every hour like I told it to, or every time I open it), background data just stops random programs from always checking for updates.

    4) Decrease the frequency at which your mail apps check for updates, instead of real time or every 5 minutes, change it to every hour, etc. I'm sure not all of your emails need to be real time updated right, and they always update once you open them anyway. The auto check feature only really saved you 20-30 seconds when you open the app anyway.
