#1 | | Newbie | In an earlier thread someone said that a CDMA phone is 'hardwired', while a GSM phone uses a SIM card.
Well, while what he said may be true, it is not entirely the correct situation.
Modern cdma phones use RUIM cards, whose shape and size is exactly the same as SIM CARDS!!
A RUIM card (also R-UIM) or Re-Usable Identification Module, is a removable ID chip for cellular phones made for the Code Division Multiple Access ( CDMA) network. The RUIM card holds a user's personal information such as name and account number, cell phone number, phone book, text messages and other settings.
The RUIM card provides flexibility to switch phones by simply removing the RUIM card and slipping it into another card-enabled phone. The new phone would then be able to make and receive calls on the user's account without having to go through the carrier for activation. A user could, for example, have several phones and switch between them, borrow a friend's phone to make a call with his RUIM card, or even switch to another carrier and keep his or her old phone. The new carrier would simply issue the customer a new RUIM card to use in his or her existing phone. The only requirements are that the phone is unlocked and compatible with the frequency band of the new carrier.
In view of this "new info", does anyone know know how to unlock a cdma phone so that it can be used in another network?
Specifically, a friend of mine came back to Kenya with 'Verizon' phone (Motorola) which has a RUIM card. He needs to unlock it in order to use it with our TELKOM WIRELESS NETWORK.
Any ideas?

#2 | | Phone Maniac | You really dont need to remove the RUIM card to get it unlocked. You just have to get the CDMA unlocking kit. Pretty expensive. What this kit does, it rewrites over the code on the RUIM, making the phone unlocked, and also removing it from the negative file.
This is what I know about this, hopefully someone else can add more to it. Good luck.

What i want is to unlock the phone (not the RUIM card) from Verizon Wireless, and use another RUIM card supplied by our TELKOM wIRELESS.
More info: I know that with GSM phones, one can get code generating software which you can use to unlock the phone. I works like this: You run the s/w, enter the IMEI # and the vendor name, and get a generated number (long) which you can then enter into the phone and BOOM, the phone is unlocked, it's is free to be used with any other vendor. All you need is another SIM card from the new company.
Question: Is there something like what I've described above to unlock CDMA phones?
I would also appreciate if you could give the exact location where I can buy/get whatever kit you are referring to.

#4 | | Phone Maniac | Check this out. This cdma software can make anyone a lot of $$$$ because it not only unlocks the phone, but it removes it from the negative files (lost/stolen).
I purchased this software. Its selling for about $900 to $1200 depending were you get it. I made the seller my friend (for a cheaper price on the unlocking kit ) and reduced the price to $500, and promised me the data cables for another $100 WITH full support.
He wanted me to send him a check, I said ,"No, lets do it via paypal to protect both of us" He agreed. The deal was I Pay. He sends the SW,he then ships the cables, and SUPPORT to install.
I made the payment, he sends the SW and BOOM..never answered my phone calls again.
I'm taking care of this issue with paypal, paypal is holding back the $500, when paypal contact him, hes coming up with a different story.
I tried to install the SW myself (IT COMES WITH INSTRUCTIONS), but i'm not that smart when It comes to computers and softwares, im good at phones, repairing, fixing water damaged,etc..NOT COMPUTERS.
If you'd like for a small fee I can send you the CDMA UNLOCKING KIT. Cause I want to get my $$$ either way. dont care if I have to sell this KIT to 24 people at $21. (AS-IS) so I can get my $500 back.
GSM unlocking is $15 to $25, CDMA unlocking is $30 to $55 out there.
