What do you think about Obama banning texting while driving?:

I hope in a few years i will still be able to use my cellphone and drive
As soon as the news came out someone has already started a petition to over-turn the ban:

They are banning texting not talking. just buy a cheap bluetooth headset and you're ready to go. Abolish Texting while driving, because the life you save may be your own!

Re: Obama bans texting while driving
Remember, OBAMA doesn't MAKE laws.
He may have signed it into a law (after congress made it). He may have also proposed it to congress...
Anyway, texting and driving = disaster. But as far as talking and driving, I am no more distracted while I'm on the cell phone than if I have another person in the vehicle. Also, I drive with one hand mostly anyway...so why couldn't a cell phone be in the other?
Also, it doesn't state anything about common people...just government workers, and in the future may include bus drivers and truck drivers that ever cross state lines.
By the way, the petition is ridiculous.

Re: Obama bans texting while driving
Using a mobile (texting or talking) has been banned in the UK for a few years now (hands-free is legal of course).
It's been a good thing as there have been too may idiots over here who've killed innocent people by losing control of their vehicle (e.g., trying to change gear with the wrong hand with none on the steering wheel).
Of course it still doesn't stop many from doing it and of the wayward driving I've seen, they've either been drunk or using a mobile. I think it's generally called driving 'without due care and attention' and the law that deals with that has been around for a while.
...and yes, the petition sounds a little over the top to me bearing in mind that the proposed legislation is meant to prevent potential serious injury or death at the expense of... well, not a lot really.
I think all pro's who drive, i.e., truck drivers, bus drivers, etc., and find it necessary to use a phone while driving have a hands-free device anyway because it's so much easier to use.
