You can actually use text messaging for AIM with any provider (with the exception of prepaid like Virgin Mobile, TracFone, etc but T-Mobile EasySpeak and Verizon FreeUp let you use it) so you could just sign up and get something like 300 text messages for less than $5 a month with most providers now..

on Verizon they offer the AIM program for free but tally the messages to potentially charge you per message.... each AIM message rates as an "outside" text message... you can check out the # of free "outside messages" available with each plan - I have the $5 plan so everything within Verizon Wireless customer base is free and I get 50 "outside" messages (that includes emails and non-verizon customers who text me/I text them). Be warned.... another CPF member and I were chatting one day and burned up 100+ of his alotted text messages
