My mother is planning to travel to Germany in June and would like to take a Cell phone with her to call home. They have Cingular but not the GSM version. I see that tmobile is the large service provider in germany but the tmobile website says that the prepaid sim cards only work in the US. Does anyone know what I should do?

The best thing to do is to purchase a "Pre Paid" sim and phone when your mother arrives in Germany. It will be a GSM phone and sim locked but it will enable your mother to call back home at "resonable" rates
Vodafone, T-Mobile and Orange all offer a pre paid service in Germany.
If you mother can purchase a Tri Band unlocked mobile all the better, that way she can use the phone when she returnes, on any gsm network.

Pre Paid roaming is not that prevelent at the momement.
Most Euro telcos will allow roaming in Euroupe and APAC (Australian and NZ)
Vodafone Australia and NZ can roam in England, Singapore and Germany.
A few Asian telcos will roam in Australia and the USA.

But soon you will see blanket prepaid roaming I beleive it about a year away.

What is a problem with roming is the cost. Roaming rates are very expensive and you pay to make and recieve calls, not good if you are on a tight holiday budget.
But that might change soon too.
Vodafone NZ customers in Australia pay standard call rates, they still pay to recieve calls but dont pay roaming charges on outgoing calls.
A mobile is not a mobile if you leave it at home
