There is a possibility this can be done. My blog has my theory for how to do this, and will be updated once I find out more about it.

Your blog disappeared. Furthermore, nobody can answer your question without knowing what kind of phone you have. By "normal phone" you could mean a lot of things. To me, any phone that doesn't have a pair of alien antennae, 3 eyes and a mouth would be considered pretty "normal".

No sarcasm intended, by the way... just need more info on what you mean.

More or less, your blog says it all. There are a lot of drawbacks to this, as when you reply it's going to show your SMS address not your gmail address, the character limit is going to cause anything to get cut off that's past the limit, if you have a limited number of text in your plan it might end up costing you extra on your bill (especially if you get spam sent to your phone).

My recommendation would be to make sure your next phone has web access. I use my WAP to check my hotmail during the day, and my phone has a built-in capability to send and receive mail from a sprintpcs.com address. That's really the way to go. I mean, your suggestion will work, but there are a lot of catches to it. Hope this helps.
