my T-mobile contract is almost up and I am looking around for some new phone plans. How does it work if I want to stay with t-mobile? Will they make me sign up for some crappy contract extension, or can I shop around and get a good contract/free phone deal like I did when I first signed up?

Re: new plan same provider
If you are a current customer you can change your plan at anytime. But if you choose any promotional plan (they all are promotional...lol) they will extend your contract. So make sure you a deal on a new phone if you are extending your contract. Or if you call them and want to change plans ask them WHAT you can change to without extending the contract. The whole wireless game is about getting customer to sign contracts so just about anything you do, they will get you for 2 more years...Ask for a 1 year extention if possible. You might have to pay a little bit more for a phone but its worth it.
