You know the recent mudslinging that is occurring between the two rival carriers, AT&T and Verizon.
I decided to take matters into my own hands and do some research.
In the mail yesterday I received both a Verizon Wireless Netbook (Global Capable) and an AT&T Netbook (naturally Global Capable).
Because of my more than frequent travels, I tend to have more than one carrier for several things. In this case, I have a Verizon Wireless Netbook and the same with AT&T.
Cost of service:
AT&T: $59.99 for 5GB
Verizon: $59.99 for 5GB
**Note that they are the same price.
Once everything was activated and set up, I did some field tests. AT&T lacks 3G coverage throughout almost all of Northern California. Verizon Wireless has 3G coverage throughout most of their coverage area, including Northern California. The nearest AT&T 3G coverage is in Sacramento, 2.5 hours away. Luckily I travel there frequently and went to my sister's down there today...so tests will be fair...both running 3G.
Once you're ready, you must use both of the carrier's native applications to start internet.
Amount of time to connect:
AT&T: 5 min 30 sec
Verizon: 1 min 5 sec
I use the Yahoo! homepage for both computers.
Length of time to load the page:
AT&T: 30 sec
Verizon: 47 sec
I went to youtube and started a 10 minute video. Verizon Wireless started playing the video IMMEDIATELY while AT&T had taken an extra 30 seconds to load 15 seconds of video. Dial-up is generally faster than that! Remember, I'm still connected to 3G.
During these tests, AT&T had what the program called broadband error code 551. The internet disconnected because of this issue 10 times. Called AT&T tech support. They stated that this just means their network is overpopulated and that they have no way to improve the quality of this. Once Verizon Wireless was connected, it never disconnected.
I love the ability to use your broadband account to send text messages (additional monthly plan suggested, pay per use OK) through the program with Verizon Wireless. AT&T does not have a feature like this.
I didn't do any non 3G tests because the length of time for either of them to load would be outrageous.
I also enjoy Verizon's new WiFi service where you can use the WiFi of several roaming partners nationwide and throughout Mexico and Canada. This does not take out of your 5GB allowance and is completely included. AT&T landline DSL has this feature...but AT&T Mobility does not.
