I'm Italian so sorry if my English is not that good:/ and sorry for my wall of text xD I'm in a sort of mess so I prefer to explain you my actual situation.
I will start from the beginning, my dear old Nokia 6600 is dead, I did the funeral but now I must replace it. I was thinking about a new smartphone, one of those all round phones (like iphone 4, galaxy s, nokia n8 etc).
In the next months I will leave Italy and I will spend a lot of time in Florida, I will travel a lot back and foreward, so what I want to do is get a new powerwfull phone that I can use both in Italy and I US, I want to get an US sim card and just switch from the italian sim to the us sim.
Well, now I started to gather informations about US mobile operators, I was used to the simple italian situation, here in Italy you can get a prepaid sim, use it in every phone with no limitation, use it for data voice and messaging. Well, the US mobile system is not that easy, what a jungle:|
I spent some time reading mobile operators websites, lookgin for informations but i could not find what i wanted so I had the (bad) idea to write them via e-mail and ask from specific infos. No way, you can't contact AT&T, verizon or whatver if you are not already a customer. So what to do if i can't write an e-mail? I found the magic button "Live chat with an operator" or something like that.
Another bad idea I spent a lot of time almost without any result. The operators were all kind but they were also like bots. It took me a lot of time to expalin them that i was just looking for informations :| they were allways like this "We can't complete the order if you don't have a security number". Order? What the..? I need INFORMATIONS I don't want to make an order yet! "I understant but .. blabla SECURITY NUMBER.. order..".
At least now I know that, as an international, I don't have this security number so I can't have a plan and I'm forced to get a prepaid -thats why I'm in this section of the forum xD -. Good, I'm still in these lice chats and now I move to the critical question: "Will I be able to use my personal phone with a prepaid sim card? Will I be able to use every kind of phone or are there any limitations?" after this question, all the operators used almost the same words "I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to talk about phones" -end of conversation-.
    I love those guys:|
Very well I was really crushing my head on the wall
Honestly, crushing my head on the wall was productive, I understood that I was on the wrong path! The best way to get and share informations, find advices and kind people is to join a forum/community!
So here I am! With my head broken, a nice headache and almost no usefull informations:S
This story was just to give you an idea, I heard that the are phone limitations for prepaid sim cards, no at&t prepaid for iphone for exemple, no data for T-mobile preapaid for iphone (I heard that t-mobile 3g use a weird frequency that is supported only by the new nokia symbian^3 phones n8 c7 etc..dunno), verizon does not use sim cards?
    So here are my questions:
Where can I find a sort of phones prepaid limitation list? I really don't want to purchase a phone and discover that i can't use this phone with any US prepaid sim card because it was blocked for some reason :S I don't want to have 2 different phones so my plan is still to get the phone here (because I need it now lol) and use it in US as well switching the sim cards.
I was considering 3 options: iphone4, galaxy s, Nokia C7 (the N8 brother) AND I'm talking about unbranded/unlocked phones, because here we almost have only unbranded phones but, again, I need to know about all the possibile limitations (like, again, no prepaid at&t for iphone), can someone help me?:|

Thank you very much and, well I hope you had no problem with my english xD

Hello there. If you are using iPhone4 you can just go with AT&T or Verizon they have nice features for iPhone4. On the other hand since you are opting to have a prepaid plan I suggest you try iSip with InTouch SmartCards. There are a lot of options out there but I uses my iSip instead since like you I am also traveling a lot and it is convenient for me since I don't have to change Sims or numbers all the time. Thank you.

Verizon does not have the iPhone. When Verizon does get the iPhone it will probably be configured like Verizon BlackBerrys which allow SIM cards for international roaming. The phone probably will not accept a SIM card with a United States Mobile Network Code or Mobile Country Code.

Get an unlocked and unbranded phone with the bands used by AT&T. They are 850/1900 MHz. You can purchase a regular AT&T SIM card online and activate it online as a GoPhone for free. If you purchase an unlocked iPhone 4 in Italy, you would have to use a non-iPhone IMEI to activate the microSIM card. Many online retailers sell SIM cards with the perforations for breaking out from the plastic carrier as either a miniSIM card or a MicroSIM card.
