So, I'd like to pick up an Android phone, but I'm around wifi 99% of the time so I do not want to buy a service contract I'll never use. If I buy a phone outright, is there any way to get cheap service for the phone for the 1% of the time I'm not in wifi distance -- essentially making it so my phone can actually receive and make calls (very, very rare, but important), and do a very low volume of data exchange (non-media email and chat client), but not paying out the ass for it if I never use it?
So, in other words, is there a good pre-paid Andriod service? Or is there a very low monthly cost service that basically provides almost no-minutes and data, but charges you for what you do use? Does anything like this exist for any Android phone/carriers?

Intercept for Virgin Mobile the we sell it for $250 and you can get on a plan as low as $25 a month with 300 min. and unlimited text and web.
