In order to use your Android device as a remote keyboard or mouse you'll need to download RemoteDroid. Furthermore you'll need to have a working Wi-Fi home network and the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment installed on your PC.
Step 1: Setup RemoteDroid on your PC
1. Download the "RemoteDroidServer" zip file on your PC from here.
2. Extract the downloaded zip file.
3. Go to the extracted "RemoteDroidServer" folder and double-click the "RemoteDroidServer.jar" file. Make a firewall exception for the application if prompted to do so.
Step 2: Setup RemoteDroid app on your Android device.
1. Access Google Play on your Android device.
2. Search Google Play for the "RemoteDroid" app.
3. Download and install it "RemoteDroid" on your handset.
4. Next, run the "RemoteDroid" app on your Android device.
5. Go to your computer where "RemoteDroidServer" is running and look for your PC's IP address on the "RemoteDroidServer" main screen.
6. Type-in your PC's IP address in the "RemoteDroid" app on your Android device and tap "Connect".
7. If you've installed the apps correctly you should now be able to use the red square on your Android device screen as a mouse pad, the two green boxes as the mouse clicks and the keyboard icon will bring-up the on-screen keyboard.

That's really neat. If someone really wants to save some money they can skip purchasing a keyboard and mouse.
