I have a Motorola V540 and am trying to turn Call Forwarding completly
off. I've looked for help on both the Cingular and Motorola sites
    without any luck.

The manuals and help message I've seen so far have not worked. When we
go to the setup for Call Forward, we choose "Voice Calls" and then
Forward and choose "Change" with the right soft key. Scroll of Off and
choose "Select" with the right soft key. It shows "Forward: Off" and
we choose DONE. It confirms with Forward Set: Off. BUT, it always
defaults back to "If Unavailable" and a number that must have been put
in when we first got the phone.

This same procedure works with my Motorola V400.

I can't find any info on how Turn Call Forwarding Off. I also can't
find any info that this is a Known issue.

Maybe try some manual CF codes? Look about half way down this page:
    <http://web.telia.com/~u47904776/gsmkode.htm>

I assume the number it's forwarding to is a voice mail system--you could
have CS turn VM completely off.

Thanks. I did try "#21#" to Deactivate all calls. It actually came up
and confirmed that All Calls was set to OFF. But, when actually
checking the setup, it was back to If Unavailable.

Thanks for the codes anyhow. It was on the right track.

Actually, after trying ##002# to unregister all calls, it did reset it,
un not correctly. I had it set to All Calls and to my Phone Number. I
put in the code and it confirmed the reset. But it reset it to If
Unavailable and to the original phone number before I changed it to
    Mine.

    ???

    Re: Turning OFF Call Forwarding

    Boy, what a pain.

I tried setting the phone number by the codes just to make sure
something was actually happening. I used the **004*PhoneNumber# to
reset all the calls to another number.

THAT WORKED. So I proved that the codes were working. I then tried
the ##002# again, and it actually worked as well. It now shows Call
    Forward is set to OFF.

Not how it should be, but it gets it turned off.

    THANK YOU.

That's the system's voicemail number, so that outcome is "normal.".

Are you sure calls didn't actually go to voicemail on your V400?

Voice forwarding options aren't stored in the phone- you tell the phone
if/when to forward, and it sends a requestto the network accepts those
settings. Some settings (like "all forwarding off") are interpreted by
the network differently than you might expect (i.e. "forward to
voicemail, as opposed to a user selected number, if unavailable.")

For example, I'm with T-Mo. If I turned forwarding off on my older
"dumb" phones, the phone would dutifully report "forwaring off" but calls
would still forward to voicemail if I didn't answer or turned off the
phone (when I was "unavailable.") My newer smartphones send the
"forwarding off" request as they should, but the settings always come
back with unavailable calls forwarding to "1-805-637-7243" which is T-
    Mo's voicemail system.

You've turned it off as far as it will go!

AFAIK, Cingular, like T-Mo doesn't let you turn forwarding to voicemail
off without calling Customer Service and removing voicemail from your
account, so it isn't really an "issue."
