You can try cleaning the contacts on
teh SIM with a pencil eraser -- sometimes they oxidize and this cleans
em up.
Failing that take it to a store, try the SIM in another phone. If it
works there, maybe you have a hpone issue. If it won't work in
another phone, then you have a SIM that has gone belly up and the
cingular store can get you hooked up with a replacement sim in a
hurry.

Same thing happened with mine. My solution was to place a small square of
electrical tape three layers thick on the inside of the battery cover
oriented so that it presses down slightly on the SIM. Haven't had a problem
since.

i had that problem on one of my moto phones and i had to carefully 'lift up'
one of the sim card contacts which for an unknown reason was a hair lower
than the other contacts and obviously not making contact.
the surgery was successful and i never had another sim card problem with
that phone.
