I have always been interested in owning a Sidekick but I am bound to At&t for 2 years and am under the harsh conditions of "If I buy a smart phone I have to pay the $30/month data plan"...well...I was just wondering if I was to purchase an unlocked sidekick, would at&t be able to detect it, and automatically add the data plan to my bill? or is the sidekick a phone that would go "undetected"?

The phone is going to try to connect to the Danger servers so you might have considerable pay per use data charges. The phone does not do multimedia messaging. It is not worth the effort for a nonsupported device.
