Freecreditreport.com (experian) are a bunch of thieves. After they get you to sign up for their 'free credit report' they will charge your credit card after 30 days for their 'credit monitoring service' and then make it almost impossible to cancel (there is no way to do it through their website, you have to call and go through several people while listening to their sales jargon).

This happened to me, and when I finally did figure out how to cancel, they charged my check card one last time, which overdrew the account I was trying to close resulting in a $70 fee from my bank. After explaining my problem to a CSR, and asking to speak to a manager, I was hung up on. I didn't put down the phone and the CSR picked up again - I finally got ahold of a manager and she told me to write a letter to customer relations. I wrote them a nasty letter and it only resulted in a refund of their overbilled subscription amount. ($15 yey!)

All credit reporting agencies should be run by the government or at least be non-profit. Then we wouldn't have to deal with bull**** like this and you having to opt-out from them selling your information every 6 months to credit card companies and banks.

Go to hell Experian and your unethical business practices! Shove your stupid commercials too.

I can't personally verify this experience, but I can empathize. I had a similar experience with a gym and their pre-authorized credit card payments. They continued to bill me several months after my contract had finished and I had left them.

I tried calling them and I ran into similar roadblocks you did. Instead of writing a letter, I called my credit card company. The credit card instantly refunded the the 3 months transactions and blocked the gym from taking any more money from my account. They also told me (and I quote) "Don't worry...we'll take care of this from here" - and they did! I didn't have to deal with the gym or talk with them again.

As far as I'm concerned, call your credit card as your first course of action and save yourself some stress.

That sucks john. From what I've heard, experian is known for ripping people off by doing basically the exact same thing they did to you. Like the guy above said, I'd call your credit card company and they will probably deal with it very quickly and efficiently.

Yep, I went through the same thing with them for the most part. I think the crappiest part was listening to the sales pitches and just being like, nope, no thanks, nooo, nope, not at all, nope, cancel cancel cancel.

Sad part is that like most anything else, it is a money making business sigh.

Letting the credit card company take care of it was the best thing to do.

I got the phone number for freecreditscore.com from my credit card statement and called them to cancel. The women on the phone was soo polite and chipper. When i told her to cancel my subscription she took 5 min telling me abot their service. When i still asked to cancel she reduced the price to $7.95 a month. I insisted she cancel my subscription and she tried to trick me by saying "OK i will cancel your 12.95 subscription, your payment is due in a couple days and that will protect you up to april 22nd. After that the 7.95 will kick in, is that ok?" I said "no cancel it totally". Her attitude changed DRAMATICALLY! She was very blunt and quick to get me off the phone line. I feel that the government shoud have these companies due away with credit scores and just have the reports. At least make it free for us to see and not pay. These scores can make or break us....

Under US Federal law (FACTA, the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003) you are entitled to one free credit file disclosure per year from each of the credit reporting agencies. The only place to avail yourself of this report is at www.AnnualCreditReport.com. This site is operated by the big 3 credit reporting agencies, for the express purpose of compliance with FACTA. No credit card or other payment is required.
