Recent rumors in the mobile world have indicated that some of the big smartphone manufacturers out there are planning on releasing a new range of camera-centric phones by the end of this year. Rumors and leaks have suggested that Sony is working on a device codenamed "Honami", boasting a Cyber-shot 20 MP camera at the back, and Samsung is also expected to release the so-called
Galaxy S4 zoom, which borrows components from the actual Galaxy Camera.
There's no mystery that smartphone manufacturers are now focusing including powerful cameras on their devices. The
HTC One uses a unique UltraPixel, Nokia impresses with the PureView camera, Sony has the Exmor RS sensor and the list goes on.
Now, according the more recent rumors, Samsung is considering the idea of equipping the upcoming Galaxy
Note 3 with a powerful camera as well, featuring OIS (optical image stabilization) as well as optical zoom. OIS is something that has been already seen before on a handful of ongoing smartphones such as the One and the high-end Lumia range, but the optical zoom capabilities are a rare sight on smartphones. Additionally, according to sources, the sensor itself will boast 13 megapixels.
The
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is expected to make its debut in September, during the IFA 2013 trade show held in Berlin. Until then, if these rumors regarding the phablet's camera have any solid foundation, then we're bound to find out more during the upcoming months. In any case, bringing optical zoom capabilities to the phablet would definitely earn some positive reactions, and come to think of it, due to the nature of the Note series (the size), Samsung might actually pull this off.
