The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active has been rumored and leaked on numerous occasions during the past several months. The last big leak contained real pictures with the device and has pretty much confirmed that the handset is as real as it can get. Nevertheless, Samsung hasn't actually made any official announcements regarding this particular device, until very recently.

Now, the SGS4 Active is official, and the Korean manufacturer has shed some light on certain questions regarding the hardware specs.

To begin with, there are indeed many similarities between the ongoing Galaxy S4 and the ruggedized Active, but there are a handful of differences as well, aside from the Active's ability to resist a certain degree of "abuse". For instance, while the size and the resolution of the display remains the same (5 inches / 1080 x 1920 with a pixel density of 443 pixels per inch) the type of display differs. The Active boasts a TFT LCD panel instead of Super AMOLED.

It's also interesting to mention that the display benefits from "Glove Touch" technology, allowing the screen to be operated even if the user is wearing gloves.

As rumored before, there's also a noticeable difference in the camera department; the Active packing an 8 MP main sensor instead of a 13 MP one. The good news is that the Active's camera features a so-called "Aqua Mode", allowing the users to capture higher quality underwater images and videos.

Nevertheless, aside from these differences, the S4 Active is equipped with the same quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage expandable by up to 64 GB via a microSD card slot, a 2,600 mAh battery that keeps everything alive and kicking, and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box with Samsung's TouchWiz user interface on top. Speaking of software, the Active boasts features such as S Health, sound and shot, drama shot and the Peel-based TV controller app which makes use of an IR blaster fitted at the top of the smartphone.

The Galaxy S4 Active takes pride in its IP67 dust and water resist capabilities, which allows the handset to be submerged under one meter of water for 30 minutes without being damaged.

As far as availability goes, not much has been revealed by the Korean manufacturer, other than the fact that the SGS4 Active will hit the market on a global level sometime this summer. The good news for those of you who reside in the US or in Sweden, is that these two countries will be the first to get the Active on-shelves. As yet, Samsung hasn't announced which US carriers will get to carry the ruggedized SGS4 spin-off, but more information is bound to surface sooner rather than later.

UK retailer Phones4U has also confirmed that it will offer the device, but no release date has been given, aside from the broad "when it becomes available" timeframe. Nevertheless, the Active has been confirmed to be present at the "Premiere 2013" show in London, which will take place on June 20. That being said, I think it's pretty safe to assume that the handset will not see a release in this region earlier than that.
