    Hello All,

I am wondering if there is a way to get the cell phone provider if you have the cell phone number? I am going to add SMS Alerts to my website and I need to know the cell phone provider of the user so that I can send the alert to the correct [email protected] email.

I know I can always just ask them, but I want to make it a bit more professional than that. What I was thinking if I cant find a way is to send the confirmation code to all the providers I know of, allowing each to have a special ID. So if the auth code was 103, I would send sprint as 10301, verizon as 10302, and so on. This way when they enter it, I check the first 3 digits to authorize them, then the next 2 to get the provider. This is however a ghetto work around.

Im assuming there has to be a way since AOL does it and when you send a txt it sends it. Im also assuming that a lot of that information is simply traded between the providers which can't be accessed by general public.

Please let me know if anyone can give me some in site on this.

(example if I have the cell 134-231-2334, I can look up to see there from t-mobile, or sprint, or so on).

    Thanks for all the help

In North America you can use Local calling guide: 2006-12-20 to see who owns the exchange. Bear in mind that some MVNOs will show their exchange as belonging to the company that carriers their calls (e.g. Virgin Mobile in Canada will show as Telus, SaskTel, Aliant, MTS or Bell depending on the province where the local number is from).

Also, now that we have number portability, this can be misleading. It will only tell you who the carrier was originally. If someone ported their number, it will be wrong.

Thank you. I think my best bet is going to be just to use the ID number as I stated

You don't need to know the carrier.
