First what kind of functions are you looking for. Games, pictures, form factor? Maybe I can help. I used Nokias for awhile, but work with Kyocera phones. I can give you the plus and minuses, depending what features you want.

AbsolutOls, how can you say "I can't believe im saying this" Nokia makes the most solid phones, build quality and stability. They may not have the features of a Sony but they actually work (and pick up signal) like a phone should. Down with Moto and Sony Ericsson, they are going to keep producing crap if you keep buying it

I use the kyocera slider, the phone is pretty nice but it comes without any good ringtones, nor pictures, nor anything.

I assume you're comparing with the CDMA Nokias, since Kyocera only makes CDMA phones. Having worked with both quite a bit, in my experience the different brands don't make that much difference in the signal strength and quality of service. A CDMA phone is a CDMA phone, no matter what company makes it. What makes the difference is the features, user-friendliness, and durability of the phone. I always advise people to play around with the phone they're thinking of buying.
I do techinical support for medium-sized midwest cell phone company and have had experience with these phones:
Audiovox: CDM 8500, CDM 8600, CDM 8410, 8900, 9000, CDM 9100, 9150, 9155, 9500, PRT9200 Bag Phone
Kyocera: 1135, 2035, 2135, 2235, 2325, 3035, 3245, 5135, 6035, 7135, KE414, KE434, SE 44 Slider
LG: TM 510
Motorola: 7790i, 7797, Bag Phones, MicroTac, Star-Tac 3000, Star-Tac 7868, T720, T731, Timeport 270C, Timeport 8767, Timeport P8097, V120C, V120E, V120T, V2397, V60C, V60IS, V60T, V60I (C&T),
NEC: 920, 960
Nokia: 252C, 282C, 918, 2220, 2260, 3285, 3320, 3360, 3560, 3585, 3585I, 3587I, 5120, 5125, 5165, 5185I, 6120, 6385, 8260, 8265
Sony - Ericsson: 618, 197, RL300LX

Why are you comparing Kyocera and Nokia? Kyocera only makes CDMA phones, and Nokia makes mainly GSM phones. Two completely different technologies...I'd say I prefer Nokia though.

In a rural are using USCellular, the Nokia has better reception as long as it is not the old Noika 5160. The older the Nokia the worse reception they get in the mountains. In fact the ones with the internal antenna do the best around here.(S.E. Idaho)
Cellphone shmellphone, I use a rotary phone connected to a transister radio with duct tape and a hanger for an antenna.
