Noob here: bought the above phone off eBay (yeah, yeah, I know...strike one against me already, lol) NEW, in the box. Charged up, called Alltel to activate; tried to download update but got error. I took it to an Alltel store and they made sure it had the latest download, then they did something to get to a screen where it showed the ESN: it showed all zeroes. The Alltel guy said the phone was "fried" and that LG might be able to reprogram it but they had no way to do it. I called LG: their tech service begins at just under $50 and goes up from there.

So my question is: I've found some conflicting info online about "changing" the ESN. To myself, anyway, what I would be looking to do is not change it but set it to what the phone is supposed to be (according to the ESN under the battery). Is this even possible? And/or legal? This isn't to clone another phone, cuz... I lost my daughter's and this is a replacement

Oh, and the reason I am considering this is because the schmuck I bought it off of (reUseACell) is making a refund extremely difficult. I figured what have I got to lose in the meantime. If it works and I can have a good phone, no more hassle from them, and if not, it's just a paper weight as it is now.

Any thots, info, links etc would be really appreciated.
