How to tell if it's unlocked

How can I tell if my razr v3r is unlocked or not?

Assuming it's a GSM Razr....Insert a sim card of a different carrier, if you get a "enter subsidy code" message the phone is locked, if you don't and you get the carrier's name on the screen, you got an unlocked phone.

I put in 2 different sim cards and it says:
"Unregistered SIM"

Yet, there is no access code and I can go in all the menus.

Does this mean the phone is unlocked?
Or can I only know by putting in a sim that is registered?

If it is still not working, put these sims in some other phone which is already unlocked and if they dont work that means there is something wrong with the sim or you simply switch on the phone and if u see a message "activation required" displayed on the top of the screen that means phone is stil unlocked.
